SketchUp 2023 is available today!

I don’t think it’s ready for prime time, the trays don’t work, you have to turn them on & off so they can work, some of them are blacked out, the tags tray to turn on & off you have to hide & unhide, it’s frustrating, thank you

Can you provide a link or a video? It’s hard to understand what your problem is.
For example- 3D text is supposed to be backwards when you flip it…?

Could you provide the example of what you mentioned here? For me it is not happening. Flip seems to work as expected (unless you inadvertently slightly move the flip plane).

I don’t have a problem - My cabinet interface handles what I need. I’m just saying that there are reasons I don’t use it.

It works on Windows but not on Mac.

I tried it again on Mac and it seems to work.

Maybe the glitch was because length snapping was on by default in the template I used.

Of course, the radius must be at least equal to the distance between the starting and ending point of the arc.

Let me add to my previous post regarding the UI. Here a side comparison of the menu bar and trays as well.
I really hope in SU2023 at some point we have the option to create a compact UI again. With more large projects with many objects and scenes, the difference between large text & spacing and smaller text & spacing can mean you have to scroll more to find what you need in a tray or just can click and work.

i suspect the wide interface is due to ipad users vs pro users. it’s probably tricky to not have ipad users “fat finger” something if the tighter UI rules are applied. it would be nice to allow selection options - for pro users a setting to select “compact” comfortable" “wide” and ipad (and other touch screen only devices) users just get “wide”

That seems unlikely, as the iPad version does not run on Windows and does not use trays!

yeah. ipad UI is closer to web UI than to either mac and pc.

but it probably has to do with the change of framework of the PC version.

That would be an awesome new feature for layout, I have also requested that, hope the developers implement it in the near future.

In fact it works on SU for iPad which CAN’T run plugins. That can be a driving factor now to roll such functions into the core program.

LayOut is similarly encumbered by “fat finger” design philosophy

Eg huge amounts of padding around objects, very imprecise cursor selection and drawing tools, compounded by a total lack of snap adjustments.

I wonder if there’s a focus group of pensioners who keep asking for more space around things.

The new release seems to have fixed this, thank you

Just tested the 2023.1 version.
Here are a few ‘issues’ that are a deal-braker to me so I’m sticking to 2022. Hoping these get fixed before/in 2024.

My issues are:

  1. The Outliner renaming bug is still not fixed. See here

  2. If you double click a nested object in the viewport in SU 2023, in the Outliner, only the top-level object is shown and it doesn’t expand the hierarchy and show the name of the nested object automatically like in all the previous SketchUp versions. You now have to click the little triangle. This leads to very much extra mouse movements and scrolling.

  3. If you have the Outliner expanded so it shows your nested objects in the hierarchy and you run some ruby plugins (like TIG’s mirror for instance), after completion of the plugin, the Outliner rolls up your hierarchy again so your nested objects are not visible anymore and you have to click the little triangle again of the top-level object. This happens with several of my own plugins (so TIG’s wonderful mirror is just used here to replicate the issue) and my guess is - it happens when objects are added/removed to top-level groups using Ruby (so the added objects are nested). → fixed in 23.1.319 (installer 2023-1-319-110).

  4. The interface is changed again - some issues of 2023.0 are fixed but some are not.

  • The big search icon leads to 12px of wasted space between the top menu bar and all the scene tabs
  • The scene tabs themselves have much left and right padding so they use more space
  • I use a separate panel with just Scenes & Styles. For some reason, you can’t reduce its minimum width below 343 pixels. Again - much wasted space for me as my scene names mostly have 4 letters or less. Same for style names. My separate panel for Outliner, Entity Info and Tags can be made much smaller than 343 pixels.

I hope these issues can be replicated and fixed at some point. Feel free to pm me if more info is needed.

230914: tested 23.1.319 (installer 2023-1-319-110). Issue nr 3 was fixed, the rest is the same.
