Searchable components browser

The components browser can get hard to navigate in more complex models with many components, and I would like to suggest a few improvements:

  1. Rather than the search bar searching the 3D warehouse, it should search the active model’s components. Quick searching of assets, especially when they are named well, is much better than scrolling through a long list of items.

  2. The components browser should by default show the model’s components, not the samples or 3D warehouse items. I think any 3d warehouse related functionality should be removed from the components browser so that it’s completely focused on finding and editing a model’s components, quickly and efficiently. The components browser is in any case not a great environment to see information from the 3d warehouse

  3. It would be good to have some way of organizing a file’s components with folders, or applying tags.

  4. It appears that if a component is only found nested in another component, is not listed in the components browser. While this is sometimes helpful to reduce clutter, it would nice to have some control over the visibility of components in the browser. An option to ‘show all nested components’ would be useful. I think there is an ‘expand’ option in a component’s right-click menu but it’s only available for externally loaded components.
Connected to this, the ruby api has a hidden?() method for component definitions, would be nice to also get a setter method hidden=()

  5. Finally, the components ‘Select’ tab has a few display options, I would like to have a ‘table’ view with columns showing other information (whether it’s internal or external, source file, tags, description, author), which can be used for sorting or filtering the table.

Components are probably one of the most useful aspects of Sketchup and the Components browser is long overdue for an overhaul.
Thanks for reading!

Better component browser function including a simple way to search the in-model list of components has been a repeated request pushing ten years now. Please SketchUp, we can integrate AI rendering diffusion magic, but I still can’t search a simple basic list?

Just a few,

It’s a very good one too, I like to have a separate SU file with all my doors, another with all my chairs/sofa etc, another with all my landscape components etc etc.
The MSS browser will scan these SU files, list all the contained components and allow you to drag one out … All WITHOUT having to open the relevant file.

All your suggestions are available in this extension, and it’s free. 5D+ Library - Manage SketchUp assets

For assets you repeatedly use, it’s good to save them out as component files into file folders on disk, then use “open local collection” in the component palette to see just that collection of stuff. It’s a very focused way to bring components into your model.
