Panic and crash in SketchUp 2024 for M3 16" MacBook Pro

Hope the update is on its way

Just try to run sketchup with Rosetta. On my m2 pro Mac itā€™s working without any crash or kernel panic.
I didnā€™t feel any slowdown with rosetta (strange)ā€¦

But Iā€™m ok with you that a bug fix should be released by Trimble, maybe theyā€™re working on it or not : No communication from Trimble (and Chaos for Enscape) since many days now :man_shrugging:

My badā€¦ Rosetta running mode finally doesnā€™t work :frowning:

Update from our side:

I gave steps when I logged a bug report about this. The steps are no longer causing a problem on my M3 Mac, but then I am on Sonoma 14.5, maybe Apple made a change?

The developer who is looking into the problem is still able to see the problem with my steps, and so although I wonā€™t easily be able to verify any fix he does, if the change stops the problem on his M3, that would be promising.

Mine is Sonoma 14.4.1. And Iā€™m on m3. Only switching to ā€œUse classic graphicsā€ makes it somewhat workable. Freezes happen less often. Usually, if I see this, it means itā€™s time for a reboot, and this happens all the time.

Sonoma 14.5 is still in beta, so users be advised, you try it at your own risk!

I am not having system crashes from Sketchup (yet) on my M1 Ultra Mac Studio, but I have definitely had a major uptick in application crashes using Sketchup 2024 and Layout 2024.

There is no discernible pattern that I can see that is causing the crashes on my machine. Just randomly selecting a tool or trying to edit a component or change scenes can trigger a crash.

The only consistent thing I can find is that double clicking an existing model to open it will result in Sketchup crashing. When I restart the program, i get a warning about extensions causing issues and the option to load without extensions. If I try starting Sketchup first and open a blank model, then open my existing model from inside the program, everything works fine.

This is also happening on my 2019 16" Intel Macbook Pro. Iā€™m thinking it is something with Sonoma because the uptick in crashes started with 2023 when I upgraded earlier this year. 2024 just introduced more creative ways of crashing. I was thinking waiting 6 months to upgrade the OS should have been safe, but apparently not.

Iā€™ve submitted tech tickets and a constant stream of bug splats, but so far the only recommendation I have gotten back is to reinstall everything and I just have not had the time do it with my workload right now.

Plugins get initialized when a document is opened for the first time that session. If you open SketchUp, start a new document, then open an existing file, any plugin issues will have already happened. Opening a file that may make use of an extension that has problems, and so the plugin is initialized at the time that it also is needed, could lead to a crash.

I looked at your bugsplats, thanks for sending those in. Each one crashed at the point that Profile Builder 4.0.2 started to load. I downloaded the rbz for that, and SketchUp crashed when I installed the extension. My own bugsplat resembled yours.

@Whaat is there a known issue with using Profile Builder 4.0.2 on Apple Silicon? The extension installed without a problem on my Intel work Mac, but crashed my own M3 Mac.

Hi, does the bug report you created deals with kernel panic when using Sketchup 2024 + Enscape (after closing Enscape window) ?
I ask because when I gave you steps to reproduce the kernel panic/reboot, you were on macOS Sonoma 14.5 and reproduce the kernel panic.

So if your bug report doesnā€™t deal with the bug Iā€™m facing, can you create a bug report for or do I create it ? (and howā€¦)

Thanks

It is that one, and it only stopped crashing for me recently. I do get updates to the 14.5 beta. The developer looking into the problem is on 14.4 I imagine, and isnā€™t likely to install the 14.5 beta. He still can repeatedly see the problem.

Thank you, just upgraded to macOS Sonoma 14.5 beta 4 this night, and I confirm that I have no more kernel panic/reboot, even when setting Sketchup with ā€œNew GPU engineā€.

Iā€™ll continue working next days with macOS Sonoma Beta 4 and see if I can confirm the bug has stopped.

If so, this was on apple side, and they silently fix somethingā€¦:man_facepalming:

Hello, my model is constantly freezing or the screen goes black when trying to do any simple command, like orbit, move etc. It doesnā€™t actually crash so I donā€™t get a bug report. Is there any fix except for downloading macOS 14.5 beta?

14.5 fixes a different crashing issue. What youā€™re seeing is a different problem, which you can work around for now by choosing the classic graphics engine in Settings/Graphics.

When you do that youā€™ll notice that antialiasing is limited to 0x. Uncheck the use fast feedback box, then you can choose higher levels of antialiasing.

The fix for the problem you have will be in an update from us. I will be coming back here as soon as Iā€™m allowed to tell you the update is ready.

at my MacOs M3 16, Sketchup is freezing at the very first minutes, I cant make more than 3 moves, and it freezes, so there is no way to open plugins like enscape or so. The problem is only with Sketchup

A freezing like symptom was fixed in the 2024.0.1 update that was released. couple of weeks ago. Enscape was recently updated to solve crashing when placing light objects. macOS 14.5 fixed another Enscape crashing issue.

Make sure youā€™re on Enscape 4.0.2.11:

SketchUp 2024.0.1 is here:

https://download.sketchup.com/SketchUp-2024-0-554-221.dmg

Check the Apple menu, About This Mac, and make sure itā€™s on Sonoma 14.5.

I am running on a Mac Mini M2 Pro, today I installed an update for SketchUp 2024, since then my Mac is crashing when I just do 1-3 movements within SketchUp. What is wrong?

Turn off anti aliasing, in the graphics settings, then quit and try again.
