Enscape has a problem where you can’t place lights in SU2024 without everything crashing - enscape say that it’s a SketchUp thing.
Hi, yes I know the light problem. But my model doesn’t use any lights.
And @Colin has reproduced the kernel panic just by drawing a simple rectangle. In addition, there is no kernel panic with “classic GPU engine”, so the problem might come from SU2024 and the “new GPU Engine”
Just be patient the experts at SU analyze the problem.
Adding a light does cause a less serious crash. I can make a bug report about that as well.
That disagrees with what we say on the system requirements page:
https://help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup/system-requirements
I imagine they’ve had a few M3 customers reporting problems.
Hummm… sketchup 2024 is macos sonoma compatible. Don’t know wich 14.x exactly, but this is claimed by trimble.
I wonder if Chaos is a serious company. For now, I’m a little bit disappointed of the provided support concerning the « kernel panic » bug with their product on mac.
The only answer I get from Chaos is that the problem should be solved on sketchup side because of the « new gpu engine ». According them, they just can’t do anything. But I really wonder if they at least investigate the point.
@colin, any news or progress on your side ?
Do you think I should create a support ticket at sketchup (and how can do do that ?) ?
Thanks for your help
You could create a case, then you would hear from support as well as me when there is an update. I may not hear anything new until Thursday.
The support form is here:
Chaos is right; they can’t do anything to help Trimble. Chaos is a strong, growing company. But their VC, Private Equity funding partners are ready to cash in. It seems they’re working on valuation, courting suitors, and accepting purchase bids.
I can’t confirm which versions/builds SU24 might be compatible with (runs fully stable without crashing) but I’ll go out on a limb and say: 14.0.0 to 14.3.1. macOS Sonoma versions/builds: What's new in the updates for macOS Sonoma - Apple Support
Although all the security changes in macOS 14.4 were communicated to devs in advisements & beta builds and later released to the public 3/7/24 (build 23E214), Trimble continued testing, on machines that couldn’t include M3’s, their SU24 Mac release candidate that became deploy build 24.0.483 without regard to these crucial changes to the macOS foundation SU24 sits upon. SU24 24.0.483 was released to the public almost a month after macOS changes on 4/4/24.
I’m very happy Trimble has dropped deprecated OpenGL in the Mac version and written a pure Metal engine. I looking forward to being able to consistently experience its speed. Maybe they’re looking at offering a Vulkan engine for compatible Win C/GPUs. Revit is the only thing I use on Windows and that would be a considerable speed boost.
Thanks for explanations I’m running sonoma 14.4.1 and SU24 runs fine, except with enscape.
Wondering if downgrading to 14.3.x should solve the kernel panic problem
And on an apple silicon, it seems tricky to downgrade macos
Same thing for me - 2023 version was pretty stable, since installing 2024 Sketchup is causing a Mac kernel panic and restart a few times a day for me.
2023 MPB, M2 Max, 32GB
Are you using enscape with SU2024 ?
No, just Sketchup Pro by itself. Multiple kernel panics per day, definitely caused by Sketchup.
Running macOS Sonoma 14.4
You may not yet have seen the posts about choosing the classic rendering engine in Settings, Graphics, as a work around for now.
Thanks Colin, much appreciated. I hadn’t seen that suggestion. Gonna give that a go!
This. This is exactly what is happening to me. I have a brand new MAC 16" w/M3 chip. I downloaded the 2024 version and the first move I made in the file was downloading something from the extension warehouse. I wasn’t sure if it was the download or the new version. The render essentially freezes after about one movement anytime I open it. But somehow, yes, can still save the file. It is incredibly frustrating only being able to do one move at a time before it crashes.
Totally fixed my issue! Thank you!!!
Hi again @colin
I found another workaround, most acceptable (for me) : It seems that there is no freeze/kernel panic/forced reboot if I launch Sketchup 2024 with “new GPU engine” in “rosetta 2” mode
For those reading this post, I must precise that I have kernel panic ONLY when using Enscape plugin, not Sketchup 2024 alone (with M2 pro AS chip)
Observing some similar behavior but no crash report. My M3 using SKP24 freezes up when I go to view model with X-Ray. Whatever tool I am on stays selected. Nothing changes on the screen. Let’s say I have the line tool active before I change the face style, the line tool stays selected. I can’t change it visibly to a different tool. I can draw things in the model, but nothing shows up. Seems I can save the model and then quit Sketchup. When I restart Sketchup and open the model, the file behaves fine again.
It’s been weeks now. When can we expect sketchup to patch this glaring blunder so the software works as expected? Workarounds should be temporary at best.
