Any news? I’ve been back saving everything and working in 2015.
I was about to report this in myself when I came across this post. Same issues. Jerky with orbit, zoom, hand, move, push, - just about any tool that re-draws on the fly. The more complex the model the worse the problem. At its worst there is no re-draw at all until the pen or mouse button is lifted when the operation leaps straight to it’s new position. This has rendered Sketchup all but unusable. It definitely occurred after latest update to OS X. I0.11.4. I have also updated Nvidia’s drivers since the OS update. The issue occurs using both NVidia’s own driver and with the OS X default driver - no difference. I am inclined to think this is definitely a Sketchup specific issue as no other app has shown any problems (including very large, very heavy video and resource intensive images in Photoshop). I have also run Tech Tool Pro to test the video performance and memory since upgrade and it passes with flying colours.
IMPORTANT One maybe significant oddity. I work in Sketchup with the Space Navigator 3D mouse a lot. I don’t know how this interfaces with Sketchup’s video operations but, while Sketchup’s native Orbit, Hand and Zoom tools are jerking badly or not re-drawing on the fly at all, the Space Navigator is zooming, panning and rotating in Sketchup smooth as silk. However it manages the video operations is bypassing this problem completely. I think this information is well worth reporting upstairs as the difference in the way Space Navigator and Sketchup handle the video may help your tech gurus isolate a cause.
That being said the solution of unchecking Hardware Acceleration in Sketchup’s preferences has given me my Sketchup back. So my heartbeat has returned to a less panicked level. I was seriously worried that I would have to re-install OS X 10.11 all over again to get rid of the update.
Aren’t these forums and their experts just wonderful!!! I have had so much good advice here and been fished out of the pooh more than few times.
Thank you so much, all of you!!

Since my last post I have discovered that unchecking Hardware Acceleration in Sketchup has solved the problem with Sketchup’s tools but has slowed response with the Space Navigator.
Seems no gain without pain … ;o)
But at least things are functioning and Sketchup is usable. So I am still a fairly happy bunny!

Same here, using a 3d Space Navigator and it works fine.
Also, deleting all my scenes works OK. But adding in one that is a simple style (supposedly faster) makes it act up again.
2015 works fine, regardless of scenes and styles.
Is there a place where I can find the last available installer for the 2015 version? I’m trying to work without scenes to improve orbit but it’s quite a hazzle…
UPDATE: Nevermind - found it here: Download All | SketchUp ![]()
However I can’t seem to activate it since I’m told my licensing information is invalid even though I’m using my serial number for 2015. I guess that number expires when I bought an upgrade for version 2016??
@bmike Have you been able to install both 2015 and 2016 on the same machine?
I have 3 or 4 versions on the same machine. But I haven’t tried reinstalling an older version, I just keep adding things. I finally took 8 off last year.
Could you explain this to me like to a 3-years old? Or swedish
? Is this something I have to do before I upgrade to 2016 and how?
@aelle, what do you need explained? I’ll do my best in 3-year old. Swedish I don’t know. A little Norwegian, yes, but it’s mostly food-related. ![]()

When you installed 10.11.4, you most likely got new drivers for the GPU. You may need to change OpenGL settings. Try Preferences>OpenGL and untick Use Hardware Acceleration. See if that changes orbiting performance.
About what you answered supersmanf.
I use SU Pro 2015 and updated to EL Capitan, is this ^ going to make SU work for ma also or do I have to upgrade to SU 2016? And what does this Hardware Acc do? Is it something that I need?
OK. I see. This process is the same for all versions of SketchUp on Mac
Open SketchUp.
Open the SketchUp menu (just to the left of File).
Click on Preferences.
Click on OpenGL.
Untick the box for Use Hardware Acceleration.
Close the Preferences window.
You may need to quit and restart SketchUp for this change to take effect. Hopefully it works as it did for supermanf.
Hardware acceleration has to do with how the image is processed for display. It would be better if it worked correctly but some graphics cards don’t do OpenGL very well and sometimes it’s a less than optimum driver software. Drivers get updated with some of the OS updates on Mac so it could be that you’ll see a change after you install the next OS update.
Hardware acceleration allow you to use the computer at is best and use bigger texture and high polygon object at better.
I actually gone back using SU 2015 that has not this orbit and pan probleblem, hoping SU team will fix SU 2016 issue as soon as possible.
Hi there!
I’m on the same boat.
The lag is unbearable, and ticking off Hardware Acceleration lowers the quality too much.
Same here. Smooth as silk with 3DConnexion, bluetooth Magic Mouse, or a Kensington trackball. Pronounced lag with the Wacom, either the pen or Wacom’s mouse atop the tablet. The 3DConnexion is appreciably smoother in motion than the mouse or trackball but all three are at least usable where the Wacom is a joke. I’ve been using the same tablet since 10.6.8 and Sketchup 2008, this is the first time I’ve encountered the issue.
Edit: MacPro 3,1 (2008), SU 2016, Wacom Intuos 3 (PTZ), El Capitan 10.11.4
Now I´ve done that and it seems to be working so far.
Thank you!
Hi all-
Thanks for all of the information that you’ve been sharing. We are working with Apple to track down this issue and we’ll keep you posted when/if we get a fix. In the meantime, please keep sharing your work-arounds and other information.
Thanks,
Marc
Just spent half a work day trying to troubleshoot this issue by un-installing plug-ins, preferences and SU. Wish I would have found this thread sooner!
Definitely related to scene creation. Orbit functions fine with complex geometry and hardware acceleration turned on, but as soon as I create a scene, the orbit function becomes so choppy it’s unusable. Delete scene and it’s fine again. Hardware acceleration off helps, but the quality is really bad with back side faces showing up everywhere.
Please help!
Good to hear this is being worked, as it is a pain in the you-know-what! Eagerly awaiting word that it has been sorted out. Thanks for the update.
It did not work after all
, so I decided to go back to Yosemite and keeping SU 2015 so now I´m back to normal! ![]()
I actually solve the problem going back to SU2015. The problem still remain with Mac OS 10.11.4, wacom Ituos Pro and SU2016:(
If this issue is really interfering with anyone’s workflow, I would highly recommend taking care of the issue like supersmanf and going back to an earlier version of OS X. Any fix that requires a re-release of SketchUp or a re-release of OS X will not be fast in coming. The only short-term hope is that we find a way to work around the problem with driver changes, system settings, etc.
Thanks,
Marc
