Insane Price Increase

Nope, not in years and years. ever ? it was 700 - 300 - 1200 since at least 2019, I’d say it was already 700ish when I started teaching, late 2016 (edited after Colin’s post)

I seem to recall that the upgrade from one classic licence to another was cheaper, not sure why.

It was $575 at one point, with an optional $120 maintenance. The price was changed to $695, that included the first year’s maintenance.

Back when the price was $495, you could upgrade to the next version for $95. So, effectively the price increased from $495 to $575, with paying for updates being an optional $95, then it was $695, with any updates for the first 12 months included. After that you would pay $120 for maintenance, and would get any major updates that happened during that time. If you let it lapse and wanted to get back onto maintenance, there was a reinstate fee. Right now I’m not remembering the exact numbers for those!

Im happy that the price is increasing for Pro.
I dont want sketchup to be hamstrung, trying to be “the cheap alternative”.
Id like a cheap version to exist for the masses… but also a fully featured Pro version (including LayOut) that keeps up with other pro design tools.

Having said that…2023 is the only version that i will be skipping completely (even though i have a pro subscription).
Maybe this wasn’t the ideal year for a substantial subscription price increase?

Lets hope 2024 comes along in a timely manner and includes some very worthwhile pro upgrades.

Please tell it to me like I am a child
I have 2019pro
I am a senior way over 55+ but I design 6-8 hrs on a good day
and yes project that seem insane to some friends
I am very frustrated with all the things that aren’t working especially the Datasmith
as I am learning Unreal Engine and the FBX export import is a pain.
If I buy now towards the end of this year the 349$ 2023
will it work next year or do I have to pay 120 $ as soon as we reach 2024
and then every year from then on?

I don’t want the online/web thing.
My current file is 1.4GB
I want a version that sits on my PC like in the good old times
Thank you.

A subscription license lets you use the program for one year, the count starts on the day you buy the license, if you buy it October the 1st 2023, you’ll be able to use it use the program until October 1 2024, you can use all the supported versions you want during the year of your subscription, that means that you could be able to use 2021, 2022 and 2023 now but when sketchup 2024 is released you can also use it without paying more but skp 2021 won’t be supported so you’ll be able to use 2024, 2023 and 2022. After the year of subscription you can either cancel your subscription or renew it, if you renew it you must pay $350 again if you cancel it you won’t be able to use any sketchup version until you pay for the subscription again.
When there were perpetual licenses you could pay $120 after the support period, to be able to use newer versions, but now you must pay the full amount of the subscription value every year.

Muchas Gracias.
Do you know if they ever has specials around Xmas or Boxing day et.
OK I must admit it is not the world for about 1 $ per day
I am about to have a heart attack it’s nearly 2 am
After multiple FBX import withb the option triangulate and double sidedc faces.
I see my SketchUp model partially in UE
Like a street view by a car park gate. But it’s still doing stuff again.
Now saving out of date packages.
I have 50.000 meshes in my model
Before I saw a screen that was like frozen where I could clearly see my model but it was very small.

So my hopes are UP
If this works in probably will buy the new SKU.
Although many day not much more in it but the 2019
But I want the Datasmith as otherwise the FBX export and import is nerve racking.
You seem to know so many things.
Do I dare ask. Do you know orc someone who knows a URL or ebook that exists ALL is not most
Settings in UE ans what they do.
Each click for me is still like finding a piece of a puzzle.
I am scared to touch anything.

Madre Mia
You are such an savant. I wish I could come to your city and do a free internship that no one wants to give me here in YVR due to my 55+ age.
Did I tell you at age 86 my grandmother disappeared from her condo in Brussels Belgium.
Three weeks later we got a post card from Cusco (right spelling) she and three lady friend decided to go to Machu Picchu and other places in South America.
My mother and I already had started a search with the police but then there was no Internet.
She simply said after she returned that we would have never let her go if she’d asked.
She lived till age 96 in 1996 and spend all her winters with me in Hong Kong where I lived then.
I always wanted to go and do her trip in her memory.
Just saw the new movie about the robots when they use matchu pitch in the worst ever back ground for a movie like this.
I will keep you updated tomorrow. And let the PC do is thing I need to sleep.
I’d c love to see some of your work there in your beautiful country if you care to share.
I know it’s beyond this forum.
Hasta luego.

Hi,

I have been using sketchup for years cant even remember how many…I do think the price increase is just too much, Sketchup should take into consideration ROE of different countries, Im in South Africa and today our ROE is 19 Rand to the Dollar, this in south africa is just way too much money…I have to renew in about 90 days and Im so sad that Im thinking I might have to not renew and try use Blender

When importing the fbx into unreal, check the ‘combine meshes’ option. That way, every object in Sketchup will become a single object in unreal. Otherwise it will make a single object of every cluster of connected faces

4 posts were split to a new topic: Workflow suggestions when modeling with a lot of groups

I wish to give voice and support to the OP’s frustration. I have been in the same position plenty of times with the old licence system or the new subscription for Sketchup. Each time its a stress. Each bill, each van repair, is a stress… This ain’t a sob story its just true…

Yes in truth SU is still way cheaper than other software and inflation is real, but to those folks saying if you earn your living using Sketchup you should be able to afford it is a little dismissive of many peoples’ reality.

There are many small jobs I’ve done that wont pay for Sketchup’s licence. Yet its still classed as doing commercial work… and if that is the only work I get offered then I continue to struggle on. (dont get me wrong there’s a line and only doing these small jobs isn’t sustainable in the long term, of course)

Often there’s hardly any money in it but hey… guess what! I want to help people, not just make money.

The prospect of learning new software like UE or Blender is right there at the top of my list of ‘yes I must get round to that but alas I have to wash the dishes and walk the dog and oh yes work to pay the bills’… there’s not enough time in the day it seems…

There’s many folk who fall between the gaps in this world and I’m just giving a shout out to those folk… keep it up dont let the big man get you down.

And yes thank you sketchup for still holding the crown of neither here nor there software, its very flexible in its limbo state, and I genuinely am not sure what I would do without it.

I agree with the original post. 46% is a big jump in the price for a subscription based software, it’s not just an incremental increase as one might expect. The reason to go to the Pro version is mostly for the ability to import and export various file types to make life easier and to use a few of the available add-ons. I don’t need virtual reality goggle support, please make another level for those who need that functionality and charge them. It sounds like a good time to start looking at other brands of software.

The uppermost reason to go to the Pro version is the ability to use it for your work. The extra file formats are an extra that is mostly, too, needed by professional users.

don’t just read the first post.
read the thread.

it’s not +46% it’s +17%

Jmichas failed to realise that they were comparing the black friday discounted price to the regular post inflation one.
They paid 239 instead of 299 thanks to the discount, and now it’s 349
a 17% raise over 4 years.
