jmichas, let us know how you get on finding a better priced program to do what Sketchup does.
It seems to me that there could be an intermediate level license between the hobbled web version and the full commercial version. What I would like to see is a desktop app version that handles extensions but does not include Layout or Style Builder.
I bought the Pro version to produce construction docs for a couple of whole house renos. However, now Iām back to hobby level woodworking and minor projects that donāt require Layout - BUT Iām hooked on the brilliant extensions like OpenCutList and others.
Having seen all the issues reported with 2023, Iāve allowed my subscription to expire and have gone back to my 2021 classic license.
Why donāt you make your own templates with all your preferences?
well, Iāll be. I thought Iād tried that before and it wasnāt something saved in the template file. Just tried again and lo and behold, it works.
Much appreciated!
You can create a shortcut for that, I have shortcuts for hide/show rest of the model, hide/show similar components, and show/hide hidden geometry and edges.
I would be pleased with a version without layout. Its useles as it is. Style builder and outliner same. Dynamic oomponents? Could domwithout. But other side Word also has 90% options i never touched in 25 years.
This is very useful to organize your model
Compared to other software on the market (hereās looking at you $10k (!!!) AUD archiCAD) Sketchup is still insanely great value. Just saying.
Its no use to meā¦ thats all.
I would love to see the desktop free viewer or a low-priced desktop version have the dimensioning tools. We have people that donāt do anything in SketchUp Pro other than create Revit models, which requires the dimension tools. Letās blow a license on someone that uses SketchUp Pro only for building Revit models. Thanks Trimble. smh.
Rhino license costs $995, and renewal $595, Iāve checked and there arenāt discounts or the possibility to pay for more than 1 year. If you mean that if you get a license and never upgrade it anymore, then it would be cheaper from the 4th year and beyond. Imagine skp selling perpetual licenses for 900 bucks, people would go crazy.
The release cycle for Rhino now seems to be ~2.5-3 years (used to be 5-6 years 10 years agoā¦). So this is ~$333/year (incl. all service releases) if you buy it for the first time and ~$200/year for the following releases - for a perpetual licence and not for rent. (and you get access to a WIP program for the next version)
The perpetual license used to be about 795USD. They also charged 10 for the Viewer in the App Store.
The SU Viewer for HoloLens used to cost around $1,500 (if I recall correctly). Now there are a few Viewers included with SU Pro.
oh yeah, I remember when I was a kid and a baguette was less than 10francs, time flies.
the value is obviously the main functionality, i.e. the 3D modeling plus the extension interface and not the additional gimmicksā¦ cherry pickinā the main functionality āonlyā or an uncontrollable private/hobby use does not substantiate a price reduction.
I tend to disagree. Layout has been a unusable and neglected liability since 2020. And cherrypicking? No, just putting the finger on a number of items i simply can do without, or finding the functionality close to bullshit.
Sketchup has loads of potential. I use it frequently. perpetual 2020. For the simple reason nothing really has bettered skp since then. The lock-in from subscriptions encloses improvement. Which is imho completely lacking. Maybe because no-one is having any idea where skp should be heading. For now its a load of unanswered questions, no point on any horizon. All kinds of hapless extraās outside of skp popping up, the why eludes me.
Skp is treated like a butterfly: flying directionless round with no purpose but eating the food of us subscribers. I am afraid it will die somehow, for lack of development.
For you and others Layout is unusable but for me and many others it is usuable and dare I say itā¦ really great to use.
Question is whyā¦?
What are you afraid of?
Your writings make me believe you would be delighted if it died!
I use Sketchup Pro and Layout professionally. For me (interior Design) it does a fabulous job. I can not imagine antything could be more productive. Itās a moneymaker.
The permanent license was $575
