I’m adding materials and flooring to my rooms but there seems to be a white space in door ways and this spot in the hallway. What am i doing wrong?
Hard to tell from just your screen shot. Might be that you need to erase the edges spanning the opening or it may be there’s no face there to paint. It would help if you share the .skp file with us.
Your profile says you are using SketchUp for Schools. That’s a web-based version for school children. Is that what you are using?
I originally thought i was using sketchup for schools since im taking an online course. I did not realize that was for school children. I have changed it now
I also tried to upload my sketchup file but it says its too large.
I don’t see a change in your profile. You need to remember to save the changes at the bottom of the Profile window.
Upload it to DropBox or WeTtransfer and share the link.
I dislike picking nits, but you chose “SketchUp Classic” and “2024 Desktop” when you edited your profile. All licenses have been subscriptions for a few years now. There is no SketchUp Classic license for 2024. You also put in “N/A” for graphics card, which is absurd on the face of it: without a graphics card you wouldn’t see anything on your monitor!
This is not entirely your fault, The forum support people are currently struggling with how to rework the profile panel to clarify things and reduce the incidence of profiles that contain impossible or nonsense entries. We often rely on correct info in the profile for insight about what may be involved in a particular user issue.
Im sorry, Im very new to sketchup and have only been using it for maybe 3 months soley to complete an interior decorating course. Maybe its sketchup pro? how do i find out this info? i have no idea what a graphics card is
The problem in your model is that you have not drawn anything to fill in those places across doorways at floor level. What you are seeing is the model’s background showing through. You can confirm this by changing the background to a glaring color in the style and then seeing how those places change from white (your background color) to whatever you changed it to.
To fix them, you need to draw a rectangle across that empty space, perhaps adding it to the floor of the room on one or the other side of the opening.
thank you. I also looked further into my sketchup program and computer system to add to my profile correctly. Better now? lol
Yes. Thank you!
Hi Britt,
Steve got to your model while I was away from my computer he’s identified the issue correctly. I fixed your model so that’s not an issue now.
Floor Plan 3D spaces purge.skp (16.0 MB)
I also went through and did my usual cleanup process. First I fixed incorrect tag usage. All edges and faces should be created and remain untagged.
I purged unused content from the model.
No need to hoard all those unused components and materials. They just bloat the file without adding any value…
I also resized a few excessively large textures.
Really there’s no benefit to having textures larger than 4098 px wide. For most textures even 4098 px is excessive. And for something like that wire_1 texture, I’d bet the thing that uses it doesn’t even need a texture. I expect a simple color would do the job.
Note that the cleanup I did reduced the file size by almost 54%.
Thanks for sorting out your forum profile, too.
In addition to what @DaveR pointed out, there are a fair number of reversed faces in the model. You can see these more easily if you change the back side color to something garish in the style, and then change to monochrome mode. Only front sides should be visible in the model.
You also have a couple of sliding doors that look like they were scaled from something. The are now only 3/16" thick, which is surely not what you intended.
There are several places where carpets or something have been drawn directly onto the surface of floors. These create z-fighting (a sort of flashing effect) as you orbit the view of the model. To fix this, add a bit of thickness to them.
One more issue: there are two copies of a vanity placed a large distance out the green axis from the rest of the model. These are not only responsible for a large fraction of the edges and faces in the model, being so far away they cause issues with orbiting, zooming, etc. You can find them by doing Camera->Zoom Extents and looking way out there (they will look tiny). Either drag them back closer to the main contents or delete them. If you really need them, drag a fresh copy out of the Components window and place it at a more sensible place.
Edit: they look like this
okay great thanks so much for your help
thank you so much, this info is all way over my head but i appreciate the clean up and fixing the file for me. anyway i can avoid these issues in the future?
Hi again! My sketchup is working VERY slowly and I’m wondering if I’m having the same problems with my file size. Can you explain how you cleaned up my file last time to reduce the size so I can attempt it please?
You can see what I did described in my earlier post. I fixed incorrect tag usage using Default Tag Geometry from the Sketchucation. Then I purged unused content from the model (Model Info>Statistics>Purge Unused). Next I used Material Resizer to reduce the size of the obese materials. I also made sure Profile Edges are off in the style.
Switching to the Monochrome face style can help. Make sure shadows are turned off and that you aren’t using Ambient Occlusion.
You could share the file as it is currently and I’ll go through it.
I’ll look ASAP.
Well, you’ve got a little incorrect tag usage which I fixed.
You’ve allowed the model to become bloated with unused components and materials.
And some of the materials are excessively large.
File size is reduced by more than 68%. It should be easier to work with but there’s still some heavyweight components in it. You could replace them with lower poly ones to help improve performance.
I noticed you had the camera set to Parallel Projection. Save that for creating plan and elevation views but do your modeling with the camera set to Perspective.
