Hi all, I have been using VRAY and it takes ages to render images (I mean about 30 min minimum with 16:9 widescreen, size approx 777 x 500 ! I only have 8GB RAM, I’m on the lookout for a new computer and no idea what is best! can anyone please recommend, I am a self-learner and admit I may be lacking some vital knoweldge as to how set up my model and what settings to use to speed up rendering, but I still think I need a new machine. any help will be much appreciated!
latest i9 64gb min + rtx 5090
A gaming computer is usually good for rendering since it maximises Graphics performance.
You’ll probably want to search the forum for other posts as this topic has been covered a lot already.
If you want specific help them find a few options of computers that are in your price range and available to you, and we can help you choose from one of them.
Hi @passion_fruit_designs, thanks for the post. There are a number of things to consider when deciding on a new computer for 3D design in general. The first and most important thing to consider is if you are going for a laptop for mobility or if you are going for a PC tower for the extra power and better price to performance ratio. Once you have that figured out, there are a number of other things to consider but there are a few univeral factors to keep in mind that apply to both options.
First up, remember that modeling itself is kept to a single core. that means that processor speed is more important than core count for that part of a workflow. Also, more RAM will allow for bigger models and higher resolution textures. As for a GPU that will depend on what you can afford and what is available. Remember that PC tower parts are often easier to update over time than a laptop and offer better performance than a laptop for the price. Finally, while high end parts are nice, you don’t always need the best of the best for most projects to get the job done. Industrial grade hardware has an industrial grade markup. It is easy to overspend for little performance improvement over a cheaper part. Check benchmarks, check prices and watch for sales.
Also for what it is worth, AK_SAM is correct that you are almost looking to build a mid tier or high end gaming computer.
Personally I can talk hardware for hours but as a SketchUp employee I can not offer any official recommendations aside from listing our system requirements so I’ll end off my post by linking them here: https://help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup/system-requirements
Good luck getting your new computer figured out! I just rebuilt my computer a few months ago and had a great time so I hope it is a positive experience for you too.
I’d be interested as to what settings you are using for something so low resolution to take 30minutes.
Can you post a sketchup file that you’ve rendered here ?- the v-ray settings should be saved, so we may be able to give you some other advice too.
