Halo @colin can you please help my file? I have the same problem “unexpected file format”. Please recover my file thank you! https://we.tl/t-8zSDSYFWHh
This is all I could get from the file. See if any of the components are of some use.
Hi! Ive been having the same problem as everyone else in this post. I would really apreciate some help ASAP, since there
s nothing us users can do by ourselves aparently. Its the second time this happens and everytime I have to redo the last few hours, because the backup isn
t updating every 5 minutes as it should. Please help!!! Thanks

Where are you saving the file?
Autosave doesn’t work in that way. Autosave saves in a hidden folder so that if SketchUp crashes it can offer you to recover your file in its latest autosaved state. Your original SKP file and its SKB backup are overwritten only when you use the Save command in the application.
Just a little suggestion for anyone that is experiencing this issue:
Always back up your work daily. It takes seconds and if the issue arises, you may only lose a days work. I back up to Dropbox and 3 local drives every day.
The piece of mind is well worth the time investment.
I could only recover the components and materials. Check the components tray in this model, to see if any of the components will help you to rebuild the model:

Thank you very much!! I ended up reinstalling my SketchUp hoping that this doesn`t happen again, since there was nothing else I though of doing. Hopefully now it will stop doing this
Ok, but i DID save my file normally before closing. Sketchup never crashed with this file. It simply wouldnt open the next time I tried, and the SKB file was not save at the same point. The skb file was working fine but it was saved 2h behind - this is what I don
t understand. Why de backup wasn`t as updated as the original file?
I save everything directly at Onedrive, and Ive read some people saying that this causes the problem, but other people saying that this has nothing to do with it. Either way, this sounds like a SketchUp problem, not a "saving my file directly to the cloud" problem, right? since this happens randomly and only with SketchUp - I
ve never had this issue with autocad, for example. I really just hoped that after 10 years using SketchUp, this kind of problem wouldn`t happen anymore.
The SKB file is your earlier SKP file. If it is 2 h old, it means that your earlier save had happened 2 h before. Autosave does not touch your saved SKP or SKB files. They are updated only when you save your model.
It goes this way: Some people can save to the cloud without ever encountering problems, but most of the people who have file corruption problems have been saving to the cloud. No one can predict when intermittent network problems occur. I am not a programmer so I don’t know if the SketchUp file format is more sensitive to these errors, but I find it wisest to do all I can to avoid them.
Nope. I’d say you’ve been lucky with AutoCAD. The issue with working with file saved directly to the cloud is that a momentary break in the connection during a save or autosave can result in the loss of important file data. Think listening to someone on your mobile phone when you have a bad connection. You can usually mentally fill in the missing data to complete words and sentences because you have a frame of reference and prior experience. Servers don’t have the ability to fill in the gaps when chunks of data go off into the ether, though.
Suppose you and I were talking on the phone with a less than perfect connection and I started talking about tidal volumes, MAC numbers, PEEP, and other things like that. I’m going to guess you might not get much out of it.
yes, but again - onedrive doesnt work like that. It saves locally and then uploads to the cloud, so it doesn
t depend on th internet to actually saving the file - only after it`s saved that it uploads to the cloud, if you have an active connection.
Where did you read this? As far as I can find it says that for every file that is stored in the cloud a copy will be placed on your harddrive. nothing about in which order that takes place…
please help me to recover this file.
Hello,
I have the same problems. I was working in a sketchup model when sketchup crashed. After the crash i could not open the model. Trying to reopen the model i get the error ‘Unexpected File Format’.
Could somebody help me and recover this model? TY
@colin , could you help me with this?
Relax. Give him some time to get to it and try to recover something. It isn’t even 8:00 am yet where he is.
I was able to recover the file:
