Unexpected file error! Need urgent help! Please try to recover the model asap!!!
I have recovered the components and materials. You won’t see anything in the scene. But, the recovered file is nearly the same size as the original file, which should mean that you used components for large chunks of the model. I am trying to find out which components contain the most things. The one called Component#13 for example, has a lot of rooms in it. If you can tell which other components have a lot of things in them, you should be able to rebuild the scene quickly.
Here’s the recovered file for you to look at:
If I figure out which are the bigger components I will let you know.
In case you can’t get everything from the components tray, here are all of the groups and components from the model, as separate files:
I am also facing the same issue. Please help me recover the file.
Only @colin can help, and you need to upload your problem file somewhere where he can access it, and post the link here or in a personal message to him.
I’ve seen this post, and will look out for when you put the file online somewhere.
Hi @colin,
I would highly appreciate your help with file recovery:
I had to recover files from deletion. After doing so, I can’t open them any more.
I have both, the .skp and the .skb files which should be basically identical. (Latest Sketchup Version was used).
Thanks for your efforts!
Unfortunately there is a chance that the contents of the file (any file) that has been recovered in such a manner are corrupt. If the file was merely moved into the Trash folder, then moving it out of that folder intact is easy. But if the file had actually been deleted from the filesystem, the blocks of the file and its internal accounting metadata may no longer be intact; some of the recovered blocks may have been re-used (and subsequently freed once more) to hold other data in which case the original SketchUp file information is permanently lost.
@TDahl that is what I fear, but I don’t have a way to tell if the file is totally coruppted or just a few bytes changed. I have a few other files from that incident that I could recover without issues. So at least it would be nice if someone can tell me if some part can be recovered or if it is beyond repairability.
The .skp file is a random grab of some of your hard drive data, only part of it looks like it’s from a SketchUp file.
The .skb was more hopeful, but something is corrupt in the mode data, that stops me from getting anything useful from the file.
@colin Thanks for the quick check anyway! At least I know now where to start over from.
Hello, @colin, can you please help me with this file? I have the same problem of a corrupted filed, both SKP and SKB are showing the “unexpected file format” message. If you are able to recover something out of it, it would be of great value to me, thank you!
Files:
As is usually the case, I could only recover components, materials, styles, and layers. There will be nothing in the scene, you would need to recreate things by moving components into the scene.
Thank you!
Hi @colin can you please help my file? I also encountered the same problem – “unexpected file format”. It would mean a lot if you could recover my file thank you!

Thanks for including the SKB file, but in the end neither file would open. Here is the file with the components and materials recovered, but the scene will be empty.
Thank you for your assistance!
