That wall face should be flat based on the instructions from the previous lessons. If for some reason it is not flat (or coplaner) then you may need to re-draw it. You can check to see if there is anything causing the problem by turning on your hidden geometry and see if there are any lines that you cant see.
One fix is to try the extension ‘Eneroth Flatten to Plane’ to bring all the geometry back to the same ‘plane’.
Let me know if you’re able to find our what’s causing the problem. Lastly, you can upload your model here and I can look closer. Be sure to purge unused stuff first so the model stays under the 4-5mb limit.
I tried again, but the extension did not work. I assume the context menu is the one that you drop down from the menu bar? When I chose DropGc it dropped the bench a fraction, but not down to the surface of the path.
I just used move command to move all the benches for now.
Hi, Eric: It’s been a while, but I continue relentlessly to complete the SU Landscape course. The Drop GC works on everything in the model, except the benches. It worked fine with the boulders in the next exercise. Very strange.
Hi there, just working through the sandbox tutorials and with the 2nd from contours ex. I couldn’t just ‘select’ the lines to delete, when I try to box over them with the selection tool nothing happens. Now I’m in the 3rd from edges tutorial and again, I can’t select the extra berming 3d meshwork from below to clean it up. Do you know what I’m doing wrong? TYIA
Im having the same problem as well. On the Terrain and Grading Sandbox tutorial @4:52 he instructs to select the “extra mesh” and I am unable to select the mesh. Nor am I able to select explode in the very next step.
Also @7:14 is the second issue that dsigneye I believe had since Im having it as well. The Instructor does not even prompt you on what to do here and just moves on too quickly when “cleaning up” so If you could elaborate on what he is doing here I would greatly appreciate it.
My choice of words may have been confusing here. You are really selecting the edges after turning on your Hidden Geometry and when you select and delete, or use your eraser tool, the faces (ie mesh) will delete as well. Give it another try. Also make sure you’ve entered into the terrain group first or you’ll end up deleting your whole terrain.
Question 2:
This is an alternative way to delete that extra sandbox terrain bit that we don’t want. Explode that new sandboxed from contours group…then double-click on the extra bit that we don’t want so that both the faces and edges are selected. Make it a group. Then delete it. Here it is again a bit slower:
Lastly, if you’re still having trouble, it may be that this is an intermediate level course and assumes that you are pretty well versed in SketchUp’s tools and functions. If you’re new to SketchUp, be sure to go back and do all of the Fundamentals courses first and then come back and try this one again and I assure you it will all make sense. Cheers.
Question 1: still stands as being stubborn and the extra mesh cannot be selected en mass or exploded. However I can select each individual line of geometry.
If you create the selection rectangle from left to right you’ll select only the edges/faces that are entirely inside it. Create your selection rectangle from right to left. And of course, to be in Edit Group mode.
Select individual objects by clicking them.
Drag from left to right to select all objects that are entirely enclosed in the selection rectangle (window selection).
Drag from right to left to select all objects that are crossed by the selection rectangle
(crossing selection).
Re. the Hardscape grading. In this section, Eric is applying the plugin Soap Skin Bubble. He selects the outer edges of the path, then applies the plugin which stitches geometry inside. Soap Skin is available in the Extension Warehouse.
