Hey there,
I’m having trouble scaling my imported reference sketch. I’ve tried both ways in given in the course and am still not getting it to work.

when I try scaling using the tape measure tool it just creates a guide.
and when I try the alternative , importing and typing in the 144’ dimension it scales me to 30’ instead of 40’

I’m extremely frustrated lol

any suggestions would be appreciated

When you use tape measure tool, press the Ctrl key (you’'ll see that the --+ sign disappears).

Have you got this to work? To be sure, the tape measure tool can be finicky sometimes, especially when trying to scale a drawing. You’ve got to make sure you don’t move the mouse at all after the 2nd click to set the measuring distance.

(Side note, this is why it’s near impossible to get this to work with a wacom tablet, but assuming you are using a mouse here.)

Also, can you clarify what you are typing vs getting? 144’ 30’ ?

Hi everyone who has taken or is currently taking the ‘Landscape & Site Design’ track. Since we originally recorded this learning track, several new features have rolled out with newer SketchUp releases.

A key change is to the Add Location / Geo-location feature. So be sure to check out our latest update lesson showcasing how to import large satellite/terrain areas as well as the availability of hi-res Nearmap aerial imagery for purchase.

Enjoy - https://learn.sketchup.com/course/creating-base-model/geo-location-new-features-update

Are all the courses available on learn.trimble.com as well?

Short answer: Yes. Sort of.

Our focus is SketchUp Campus, but we do keep some level of parity with learn.trimble to support that site as well. You’ll find most of our courses there as well, the video lessons are fairly simple to share, just don’t look for exact duplication of everything.

Great training. Enjoying the course and its applicability. Excellent instructor.
However, in the module 02 Terrain and Grading Extensions Exercise, it hangs up.
The partial error reads,
An AJAX HTTP error occurred.
HTTP Result Code: 500
Debugging infornation follows

Please help!

We have heard of some errors in the past few hours. Please try again, we’ve reset the site, hopefully it is working for you now, please let us know if not.

Otherwise, great to hear you are enjoying it!

Tyson,
Thanks for your quick reply.
Just checked - its working OK now.

In the hardscape grading exercise, I can get the ramp built as per instructions up to running the From Contours extension, but end up with the grade looking like a bunch of small triangular polygons with no top face (surface) after running Joint Push Pull to - 6". The instructor grabs the lower face and pulls it up to snap along the top sidewalk surface, but mine is chopped up into little bits.
There is a grouping or smoothing step I am missing? Have re-run that segment a dozen times but can’t catch my mistake.

Eric will know better on this one and may have some better insight tomorrow. For now, just to check, do you have Fredo’s most recent version and do you get different results trying the various types of Joint Push Pull? (His newest version has a few more types of JPP than his original)

I’m not sure what’s happening with your file, with one of the options (The NORMAL based tool) I get the various segments from the original broken up surface, but with most of the options I’m seeing decent results. Any thoughts @eric-s ?

Thanks @TysonK. @Tazmanian - I’ve never seen this before. Have you tried any of the other options in the Joint Push Pull toolbar? Specifically, Vector Push Pull which keeps the extrusion locked to the Z, or blue axis?

Also, try checking the settings as Fredo puts in a lot of extra features that I often don’t use by I tend to stick to the default functionality. See my settings here if they match yours.

Lastly, In order to keep moving forward, I’d recommend starting again with a clean copy of the ‘01_Terrain_Exercises.skp’ file in the event something happened to the underlying sidewalk geometry itself. Let me know if any of these help.

The version of Joint Push Pull used is 1.03 and it has only one icon. I looked around for Fredo6 toolkit, but could not find. It is not on the Resources list for the course, but appears in the Tools menu on the video clip. Which newer version has the multi types of PP (like vector) we see in the video?
Maybe the better build is by Soap Skin.

Try this version - SketchUp Plugins | PluginStore | SketchUcation

Also - keep in mind that this step in the process is not required but optional in order to provide a sense of realism in your models should you want to depress your planting areas as it would be in the real world.

I understand. Just like to try out all the options taught in the training, since your team took the effort to put them in. You never know when one will come handy, and right now, as a beginner, almost everything is shiny new and very interesting to learn. Will let you know how it goes once I get back to the module with your suggestions.

I am a middle school engineering teacher and wanted to know if I can use this Landscape Unit with SketchUp for school web version. I ask because the videos that I previewed seemed like they use SU extensions and I am not aware of these extensions being available for the school web based version. Thanks.

You are correct that the web version doesn’t support extensions, so unfortunately, those techniques wouldn’t work in web. That said, Eric covers a lot of native tools, any of those will work.

To echo Tyson…the extensions just speed up the workflow. Most things can be done with Native Tools (ie web). Feel free to send me a private message if you get stuck on anything in particular and hopefully I can point you to a Native Tool/work around. Cheers.
