For your interest, I was the one that tested the problem, and worked with a developer until it was fixed. In my tests SketchUp would fail 11 times in a 20 launch test. So, typically it would have been working about half of the time.
As Dezmo says, the latest 22 hotfix restores the automatic resizing of the name column. Itās been implied that making all the columns user size-able is too difficult to achieve and wonāt be happening anytime soon.
Hi everyone-
Iām on Sketchup 21.1.331 and running the latest (current) version of Mac OS. I had this problem back in Nov, and after using Colinās fix of re-naming the PrivatePreferences.json file to another name things worked again. Now the issue is back, and nothing I do seems to solve the problem. Iāve tried every trick on this forum so far. Any other possible fixes or work-arounds?
Sometimes, adding a few new tags and the making the panel real small will fix it.
There are other fixes, you might wanna do a search in this forum.
I couldnāt find any fix that worked every time, but closing and reopening SketchUp would fix the problem half of the time. Once you have SketchUp open, and a new document that can resize the name column, it should remain good until you close and reopen SketchUp again. At that time, again you have about a 2:1 chance of it being ok.
New user here and I must say that Iām not at all impressed. The 30-day trial seemed to work okay, but after switching to an annual license Iām greeted with this bug. And none of the fixes suggested have solved the problem. (Thanks for the info, though. It was worth a try.)
In the process; however, Iāve met the wonderful, equally buggy and onerous license server that reports a ātechnical problemā if I quit and relaunch too many times in an attempt to fix this bug (a bug that I see has been around for a while without a fix from the developer). A developer who overlooks the obvious solution to let users resize columns. Developers have been doing that for decades.
Oh, and after quitting and relaunching (and signing out and back in to make the license server happy yet again), SketchUp now only gives me the option of selecting āstart a 30 day trialā even though Iām signed in and fully licensed.
Oh, yeah. And this unresolved but makes all of the work Iāve done carefully organizing items in my Tags window useless because I can see only the very beginning of the tag names.
Yeah, I wanted to love SketchUp but so far Iām unimpressed and quite frustrated. SketchUp has some great features, to be sure, but a buggy and annoying UI and authentication server defeats all that.
Thank you Colin and Mike - Iāll keep trying things. Iāve done both of your suggestions without success, but it sounds like I just need to keep trying things and sooner or later it might re-set itself. Fingers crossedā¦
Thanks Mike, This solution worked great - magic!. I donāt know why they donāt make SketchUp and Layout more compatible to each other and to the MAC system.
It would be helpful for Layout and SketchUp to share the same tools also.
SKETCHUP! - Please read this and change your clunky program to be streamlined and smooth.
I did update from Catalina to Monterey and that caused bigger SKP compatibility problems so I was not about to upgrade just yet. I emptied my iMac and went back to Catalina.
For future reference - the fix put forward by forum member āthibautā in another thread worked for me also on SU2021-Pro under MacOS Catalina.
I opened a drawing with a TAG window having a name field that was too small and not resizable. Grabbed the corner of the TAG window and resized the whole window to as small as allowed, then grabbed and resized the same window out to be wider, with the benefit that the name field was now wider than before. Still canāt resize the individual TAG window name field, but itās width adjusts to fit the total size of the TAG window, which solves the problem well enough.
NOTE - Before trying the TAG window resizing fix above, I did rename my Sketchup(menu) ā Preferences ā Files ā Templates ā [Folder Icon] => (new finder window listing) my-previous-custom-template-file (renamed to) old_my-previous-custom-template-file. Upon restarting SU, it seemed to have substituted the standard āArchitecturalā template in place of my-previous-custom-template-file I started using months ago after the earlier āArchitecturalā template. Maybe the TAG window name field problem has roots in the template file also ???
Anyway, resizing the TAG window is a workable fix, with many thanks to āthibautā on the Sketchup Forum. More testing will reveal if the TAG window name field remains wider across restarts. UPDATE ā which it does not unfortunately, however, I was still able to fix the TAG window name field by reducing itās size to minimum, followed by expanding the window size, which automatically widened the name field. That is helpful.
Thanks a million Mike! After months of frustration, your instructions fixed the issue for me. I canāt even begin to imagine how you figured that one out.
Genius! So simple and seemingly so effective. Thanks Mike! ![]()
