Struggling with this same tag column resizing problem. I’ve upgraded to the latest OS (Monterey 12.0.1) which did not solve the issue for me. I’ve been trying the workaround proposed by Colin, but pasting the provided text into “Go to Folder” hasn’t gotten me anywhere as I simply get a bell sound when executing the paste, but it doesn’t produce any folders to continue with. I haven’t been able to find the folder manually either. Has anyone else figured out an alternative solution? I have a large time sensitive project that is more or less dead in the water without being able to see my tags. Thanks in advance for any other thoughts or suggestions…
Open SketchUp
[menu] SketchUp > Preferences > Files
hit the right folder icon next to templates
Close SketchUp via the dock icon
hit Cmd + ↑ (Cmd + UpArrow)
That did it! Thank you Mike, you rescued me from days of frustration… Now if the next SU update could add user adjustability of the column width and bring back the entity info-new-tag feature as sigfreds suggested that would be grand!
Hi Mike, does this work on Mac?
Mike’s instructions were for Mac, as a work around to the problem of not getting to the folder in Finder. I know at least one person had copied and pasted too much of the text in my message. Here is what I said before, but with the text to copy separated:
In Finder, choose Go to Folder… from the Go menu.
Copy and paste this text into the go to folder dialog:
~/Library/Application Support/SketchUp 2021/SketchUp/
Press return, and you should be taken to the folder where SketchUp 2021’s PrivatePreferences.json is located.
Much Thanks Colin…
Only problem I found with this solution is it takes out my sketchup license. I have to put my license back in for the program to work
If you only renamed the PrivatePreferences.json file, you will have to agree to the terms and conditions again, but you shouldn’t need to reenter your license. The license file is held elsewhere.
As I would not have bet my life on what I just said, I did test it! Indeed, myClassic license was still there.
Thanks Mike… it worked a treat… although I don’t know why. Even better! Happy holidays.
HI all.
This worked for me too.
Just one extra thing I had to do was to: Restart my Mac: then open sketchup again.
I also don’t know why…probably never will…
Thanks so much to those of you that do.
Also, found that if you get annoyed at the 'Tags" window when the columns don’t resize - and accidentally re-arrange the order of the columns - Sketchup crashes…?
It is pretty annoying to be paying so much for this now and not getting much to show for it.
Hope the effort dial at Trimble isn’t stuck on mediocre…
Keeps happening though…
Now it seems to have messed up my licence details. Can get ketchup to open. Says I have too many machines…only got one.
Can’t get on to sketch website - won’t load … awesome
How do we get this fixed?
Worked for me!!! TFFT lol Thank you!
still not resolved. running macOS Monterey 12.1 and SketchUp 2022
Any update here??!! This is extremely annoying and has been an issue with with mine for over a year and updates or workarounds don’t solve anything. This seems like a very simple fix for Trimble and is essential to workflow and organization.
Still having the same problem here. Sketchup 2022 and Monterey 12.1
This is not acceptable. You charge me $400 a year for a buggy program I cant use when this happens. I have wasted more than the subscription fee trying to to fix it. Pull your finger out Trimble. This has been going on for over a year and over 2 versions.
Please update your profile, it states you are using 2021 as an operating system. It does not exist.
Fixed. But it seems Trimble just ignores this problem anyway. It was going on in 2021 and is still doing it in 2022.
From what I gather it’s a tricky bug to reproduce. Although it has happened for a few users intermittently, it appears to be fixed or intermittent for many, but not for some. I was an early and loud complainer on this bug as it is very hard to work with, but after an OS update and closing and re opening the window (it’s not clear if either of these is responsible) it’s been fixed for me and has stayed consistently fixed for months now in 21 and 22. Different fixes seem to work for different users. For me at least this is no longer an issue, but unfortunately it’s not clear exactly what the path to fixing it is.
The real ask here is for the UI team to make the columns in the Tag window individually user sizable. We should be able manually change the width of each column in the Tag window by dragging the lines in the header around, just like every other interface in every other program. The Tags window in Layout already behaves like this now, it works great, why the SU Tags window (on Mac) does not is a mystery.
Adding this necessary functionality would fix the bug and make the SketchUp Tags widow much more user friendly and productive.
@endlessfix I just installed SketchUp 2022 (Version 22.0.315) and on my Mac (Big Sur 11.6.4) the Name column problem still exists, just as in SketchUp 2021. I can resolve this by selecting New from template, select a template, quit SketchUp, then re-open SketchUp. Most of the time the Name column after restart has the right wide, but sometimes I have to restart SketchUp several times. Very Annoying. I hope Trimble will fix this issue soon!
