Everything was working fine last week, but now I can’t get SketchUp to open… it closes as soon as it opens. It doesn’t matter if I try to open an existing drawing or start a new one; it opens, then crashes. I’ve also rebooted.

Does the BugSplat window appear?
Dan
There is no BugSplat; it doesn’t have time to register anything. The model opens, then closes right away.
Are you launching SKP from a file (double clicking?) or are you launching it from the application icon?
What happens if you launch SKP from it’s icon or location in your applications folder?
Mike
I’ve tried to open it all different ways, nothing works. i tried launching from the icon again and finally got a BugSplat. then double clicked the icon, and it had me log into Trimble ID, but when I tried to start a new drawing, it crashed. I’ve tried right clicking on an existing file and open with 2025; same results everytime.
A test:
In File Explorer, go to:
%LocalAppData%/SketchUp/SketchUp 2025/SketchUp
(You can copy this path into the File Explorer address bar.)
rename the PrivatePreferences.json file to say PrivatePreferences_bak.json
See if SketchUp will start and regenerate the file with factory defaults.
Dan
yes, that seemed to work… now what? What is the best way to proceed with all of my personal settings?
Well, something in the old file became corrupted.
If you have a good code editor (Notepad++ and MS VSCode are both free,) with SketchUp closed, you could try to copy some of the settings sections from the old file to the new file. I would have most suspicion on the tray and panel settings myself.
You could also try to make a copy of the old backup and just delete the section for trays, and try that.
I know. It’s a pain in the rear. The only other alternative is to resetup your toolbars and trays, etc.
When you get things working again, save a backup of the preferences file.

I’ll probably take the safe route… Thanks for your help… Cheers!![]()

It’s still happening once I close the file or try opening a new or existing file. I’ve repeated your suggestion over and over. I even got advice from Tech Support to go into the Roaming AppData… and delete the WebCache folder (didn’t work either). I presume my next option is to reinstall SU2025? Should I uninstall before reinstalling? I just want to protect any preferences that I might have.

Locate the downloaded installation file. Right-click on the downloaded installation file and select Run as administrator. Then select the repair option.
This will keep preferences etc.
