Constant crashes when closing

Fresh install via fresh OS install (new PC/Video card), SU crashes every time I shut down.

AMD 9800X 3D
32Gigs of Ram
Nvidia 5090 driver 591.44
Windows 11 Pro Build 26200
SketchUp 26.1.189 Suite edition

This is a fresh install, on a brand new install on the OS. I reinstalled after getting the first round of crashes upon every shutdown. I started then stopped logging bug plat crash IDs but then started taking them again. I should have close to 10-15 if not more.

Crash #54797

After REINSTALL SU
Crash #54878
Crash #54879
Crash #54890
Crash #54986
Crash #54989

Basically start SU go to shut down - crash. Open new SU - crash. create a simple model close SU - crash. No plug ins installed this is a fresh install of SU

My reinstall consisted of the following:

  • Uninstall SU
  • Restart
  • Remove any left over folders both in Program Files and AppData (removed everything including Vray

Working fine on my main laptop but wanted to use the desktop for heavy rendering thus the install on this box.

See this test:

This does sound like a corrupt Private Prefs file issue. Working on a more robust system to handle this. Thanks for the assistance Dan. @JimL Please report back with your results, if this fixes the issue or not.

Thanks guys,

After renaming the .json file to BACKUP opening SketchUp then closing , received another bug splat

Crash #55740

Couple of things to note:

  • I deleted all SU, Trimble and Vray files before the reinstall
    • It created a bunch of older SU folders in AppData
      • SketchUp 2023
      • SketchUp 2024
      • SketchUp 2025
      • SketchUp 2026
    • My .json file was located in %AppData%\Local\SketchUp\SketchUp 2026\SketchUp\PrivatePreferences.json” ( which is basically the same but wanted to mention anyways)
    • I created a simple box then closed without saving.

Thanks for trying, still looking for a solution. Note same build installed on my AMD laptop (specs in profile) but no issues there besides the very long load times to start SU via New (not loading any models).

Would like to add that I’ve switched between old and new graphics engine still same issue

Sorry, incorrect. The path you give is (supposed to be) invalid.

%LocalAppData% is the correct Environment variable for the path discussed. I.e.:
%UserProfile%/AppData/Local/

%AppData% is the ENV variable to: %UserProfile%/AppData/Roaming/

There is not supposed to be a "%UserProfile%/AppData/Roaming/Local" folder path.
HOWEVER (@TedVitale_SU take note) it appears that SketchUp (or it’s installers) have been creating folders in this bogus path. (I have folders for SketchUp 2021, 2022 and 2094)
These fodlers have PrivatePreferences.json & entlog-sketchup.txt files, a UUID named temp file and a “working” subfolder.

Sorry I meant \Users\Jim\AppData\Local\SketchUp\SketchUp 2026\SketchUp

Right which is:

%LocalAppData%/SketchUp/SketchUp 2026/SketchUp/

wanted to follow up with this issue.

This is a weird one. I had to leave for a few days on business and now back in from of my workstation/gaming rig.

Right before I left, I installed my 3D connexion mouse and drivers. Did not really get a chance to test or use sketchup at that time. Now that I’m back everything is working and not crashing when closing SU

The only thing on this system that was changed was installing those drivers nothing else. Now when I close a model or simply open and close sketchup it does not crash.
strange but its working fine now.

Thanks everyone for trying to help
-Jim

Was the #D mouse connected before the drivers were installed? I.e., back when it was crashing?

Nope, installed the drivers and mouse at the same time after I was getting all those crashes.
