Crash while closing

hello to you all.
this is a crash a got Crash #149117 . when i reguraly close sketchup (the latest version) a bugsplat apears on screen. when reopening sketchup than some of the toolbars are not in place on bar but on screen . this is happening only on my windows pc at work but not on windows pc at home. would anyone help me with that?
thank you MIRO

that usually indicates the install you made doesn’t have all the permissions.

download the installer, and right click on it / run as admin.
here, you can repair your install.

Usually. But:

On my machine I also get a bugsplat (which of course I send) almost every time I close Sketchup 2025. In this case, the crash prevents UI changes (e.g. Toolbar positions) from being saved.

Unfortunately it has little to do with how and how many times I reinstall, clean install…whatever, and what kind of Nvidia graphic driver (game or studio) I’m using. It’s a bug in some HW/SW constellations that needs to be fixed. Period.

true, didn’t think of it this way.
SU launches with the latest “stable” UI.

BTW
Workaround for me: switch to classic graphics engine, restarts SU, make the UI changes, restarts SU, then avoid UI changes if using New graphics engine.

Edit. Just came home and checked. every time I close Sketchup 2025 I get a bugsplat, no matter what engine… :frowning:

no luck. i basicaly uninstaled su2025. no plugins , no templates all clear and then i installed it again. a soon as i chacked the graphics engine to classic one and closed sketchup . bug splat came up again. have no ide what is going on.

This is the “expected” behaviour.
But if you reopen it, it should open with the classic engine. So, when you close it again, it shouldn’t crash. (I think that’s the case for me, but I can’t check right now because I’m not on that machine.)

Thanks @dezmo but ive done that as you are saying , changed the engine , closed ,reopened and than closed with bugsplat. For no reason. No extension its just pain freshly installed sketchup. It is pain in the a… same Crash #149541 . i think @DanRathbun ones mentioned to ping @colin to try to get some answer ??? i am not sure…

OK so its fixed. dont know if this was what fixed it but i did this.
right click on UI , go TOOLBARS…, reset all.
after that all toolbars keep thei positions and no bugsplat after closing.
so seems o work for me.
Thanks for your help guys

This indicates that (once again) the preferences json file becoming corrupted is crashing SketchUp. I have filed a complaint that this file has “too many eggs in one basket” and it’s parsing is too fragile. I have been promised (by @TedVitale_SU) that they will look into shoring up the preference handling.

It’s an unfortunate side-effect of changing from using the Registry on Windows and the Preferences system on Mac to having a uniform handling on both platforms. As you wrote, they likely put too many eggs into one basket, letting a flaw in any one egg spoil the entire batch.

This topic is not solved … “resetting the tool bars” does not work !

Its been the same for me … As the bug splat says this could be a graphic card issue, (which I doubt) I have done the following:

  1. Disabled all the Extensions
  2. Ran a reinstall
  3. switched to “classic graphics engine”
  4. Also tried “new graphics engine” & “use system default”
  5. and tried “new graphics engine”
  6. Confirmed the latest graphics driver is installed
  7. confirme that I have direct X 12
  8. Running a NVIDIA RTX 5000 card
  9. on Windows 11 professional 64 bit
  10. even on a standard metric template “empty model”

I still get a bug-splat every time I close sketchup

12th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i9-12900KF 64.0 GB 64bit
Windows 11 Pro version: 24H2
NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 16gb

I don’t think I have a bad machine and other programs don’t give me this much hassles !

Frankly … I’m too scared to work on Sketchup now as I have a deadline and could loose loads of work … how to trust again ?

Does anyone have a solution ?!

Thanks, Sérgio

A test:

With SketchUp closed, you can try renaming the PrivatePreferences.json file. It is at:
%LocalAppData%/SketchUp/SketchUp 2025/SketchUp
Rename it something like PrivatePreferences_backup.json

Then restart SketchUp, it will regenerate the file from scratch with factory defaults.
Just load a model, and then quit and see if it BugSplats.

Very impressive - Thank you !

I asked Sketchup, who suggested removing extensions … renaming the plugins folder etc.
Did not work.

Followed your suggestion and Sketchup started up as if it was the fist time … and on closing no bug-splat.

I’m always amazed at how its the “outside people”, who make sketchup great & produce the plugins etc

Thank you - Learned One !

I know about this because it happened to me in several versions. It was @colin I think that first made me understand that the preferences file can easily become corrupt. I asked @TedVitale_SU to see if he could have the developers look into separating the file into multiple files so we do not loose all settings if for example, the trays and panels settings get corrupted.

If you look back up in this thread, you will see we were discussing preference setting corruption before you joined in the topic.

This subject HAS indeed NOT BEEN RESOLVED.

Very odd, on two machines I have no issues, on two others systematically the .json file gets overwritten at start of SU, so even if you keep a “backup” it gets overwritten as SU opens.

All of these machines are running on Win11 & I’ve installed the latest build of SU in the same correct manner as always…

This is hot garbage.

I, also, get a bugsplat on every exit.
I, also, cannot open SKP directly into my file because it insta crashes.
When I open SKP itself then it opens and then when I go to open a file - it hangs permanently.
Meaning I have no way to actually open an existing file.

I’ve just done Dans solution of deleting the JSON file and now I have to re-setup every plugin both in my UI and I have to add go through the verification with all my paid plugins etc.
and my templates etc have all been reset.

Pure hot garbage.
Which I’m going to have to do because it’s the only way to get back to an existing SKP file just so I can actually do some work.

Yup as I had said …

So, say if it is the tray and panel data that is corrupted, resetting the file resets everything.

Now if you made a backup, you might be able to copy certain sections of the old JSON file into the new one, to say restore the toolbar layouts, etc.

But we should not have to do this. Something is amiss and needs to be fixed !

don’t worry, SU26 is right around the corner, it’ll surely be fixed then :upside_down_face: :upside_down_face:
