SketchUp for iPad – Release Notes

I was working on a file for about an hour, when without warning, the app closed without saving my work and started an update. I lost an hours worth of work simply because this app doesn’t seem to have any kind of autosave feature!
How is it possible to build an app like this in 2025, and not have autosave or version control? I could deal with this from a free app or even a cheap app, but for $16 a month I expect a better experience.

Is this the setting you have?

Why would this be defaulted to disabled? What are the negative consequences to turning auto save on by default for new users?

6.5.8

Hi @DTSnyder, by default the app sets autosave to a 5 min interval, if yours is set to any other value it would have to have been adjusted at some point.

If you’re looking for even more assurance that your files will be safe, we recommend saving them to Trimble Connect, our free cloud storage option for files. You can store a model on Trimble Connect by tapping the ‘Publish to Connect’ option from a file’s overflow menu on the home page.

After tapping there, you can follow the app dialogs that allow you to rename the file, pick or create a ‘project’ to place the file in. You can even add a subfolder to a project if you want to further organize where the file is stored. If stored on Trimble Connect, your files wont be lost even if your device is lost or damaged, and you’ll be able to restore an earlier version of the file through the Trimble Connect website. More information on Trimble Connect can be found on our help center here: https://help.sketchup.com/en/sketchup-ipad/working-sketchup-files

Okay. How do I stop it from auto saving to Trimble every minute?

I completely understand that we’re trying to make it so work is not irrevocably lost, and I appreciate that.

I don’t mind it saving every minute but I cannot have it going to Trimble. I do not have a solid internet connection and my program is crashing every minute trying to auto save a backup to Trimble. It’s a wonderful option.

How do I turn it off?

Hi @Danimaupin, there is an upload process when you actively save a file stored in Trimble Connect but there shouldn’t be one happening for autosaves, those should only be saving locally. Would it be possible to get a recording so I can better understand what’s happening? If it helps in the meantime, you can adjust the timing between autosaves in the app settings.

Furthermore, improvements to cloud storing and saving is something we’re actively working on now and it would be great to get your feedback on.

hot tub deck.skp (2.4 MB)
Lego pieces.skp (7.0 MB)

So I’m now having a hard time recreating the issue exactly as it was the other day. I was working in a file that says it is online (little cloud). I don’t remember putting it in Trimble since it’s a crappy little Lego file, but I must have. I don’t normally have files on Trimble simply because I live in an area so rural that the post office is only open on Tuesdays and you only have Internet/phone service as far down the street as you know peoples’ dialup passwords.

I had split screen going in landscape mode (left quarter photos, right three quarters SketchUp). I have auto save set to every minute. The file was auto saving every minute with the circle around the save icon, followed immediately by a second saving animation around the cloud icon. That’s when the file would stop doing anything until I four finger swiped out. Upon coming back the program had crashed and reloaded the auto save from a minute before… And this was every minute. The file in question is 7.4MB (which makes no sense to me since it’s just a handful of Legos with basic flat color texture).

Today I’m working in a similar manner on a different file that is not cloud based, and it is still starting to lag severely on autosaves, sometimes freezing until crash and sometimes getting ahold of itself and becoming useable again. This model is 2.6MB with photo texture as objects.

I did have an issue with the split screen earlier where it would glitch and SketchUp would not come back full screen without needing closure, but I’m not sure that’s the same issue.

I always work in landscape.

It looks like a Lego Micro Millenium Falcon is being caught up by this issue. Is there a synonym other than ‘Lego Firetruck’ that says ‘Urgent’ more than that?

I haven’t been able to figure out what is the issue you’re referring to. But, there is an issue where SketchUp appears to get locked up, and it would happen in portrait or in split view.

Go Home, then come back into a document. Drag the palette at the right end into the second row. Then the locking up shouldn’t happen.

Thanks for the breakdown @Danimaupin, I’m going to take your files and see if I can reproduce something like this using split view or stage manager. Haven’t had any luck with initial testing though. Regarding the file size, I can almost guarantee the size is coming from the environment. The 2K environment files are several MB each and adding an environment stacks that right onto your file size.

@colin The issue you’ve caught has to do with the shortcut bar eating up memory. This is an issue that surfaced in 7.0.0 and we’re working on fixing asap. As a workaround, folks can turn off the shortcut bar from the settings menu.

Omg… I had the same problem with the toolsbar a month ago, but didnt knew that was the problem. All my models were super lagged and couldn’t work so I reinstalled the app… but lost all my projects on the way. Thousandth hours of work lost in two clicks and now I found that was all about that tiny toolsbar…

That was my mistake because it was all saved in the iPad but it could be a nice feature to add an online backup option for those who work offline
Some kind of compressed file with models information that’s automatically saved in the cloud each time you get connected, so that we can reach out to recover the files in emergency…

@oetamizad I’m really sorry to hear about the lost work. Our latest release (7.0.2) resolves the memory issue with the shortcut bar, I recommend upgrading at your earliest convenience, and just a reminder that you do not need to uninstall the app to update.

To your suggestion about cloud file saving, you save your models to Trimble Connect right in the iPad app which will save them online. Once saved on Trimble Connect you can mark files that you want to access while offline as “available offline”. Those files, if edited offline will then queue up to back themselves up once you are back online. For more information check out this help article.

Hidden in plain sight! Thank you. When I look in the app on the iPad, 7.1 is still listed, but this is fine. Thanks again
