Sketchup failed to open document error

Looking at the images, most of the edges and faces in the model are probably in the crumpled sheets and pillows in the bed.

In addition to @mihai.s’s comments about learning to purge unused stuff from your models and looking for lightweight entourage components, also keep an eye on correct tag usage. There’s a lot of incorrectly tagged stuff in this model.

I also purged unused stuff.

And then I looked at material size. An image for some text on a refrigerator that is over 13 thousand pixels wide? That’s crazy. Especially since there doesn’t appear to be a referigerator in the kitchen.

Farther down in the list I saw a texture for pasta. Unless your story is about the pasta you could manage with a simple color instead of a texture.

You should be examining entourage components in a separate file to make them suitable for your project before you add them to it.

There’s also a lot of junk hanging around outside of the house like another bed and a house plant. Those should go away.

PResumably you plan to make renders from the model. You should correct the reversed faces. In the kitchen scene there are plenty. I changed the back face color to something to make them more noticeable here.

After the cleanup I did the file size was reduced by a little over 72.5%. More could be done to make your model work better.

I thought that this was only limited to the Finnish army, 50 years ago. We too had to make a low-poly bed.

I was taught to make hospital corners and make the bed tight enough to bounce a fifty cent piece off of it.

yes, I’m not clicking the screen before…still it didnt open up.
can u share me the purged file?

I’m doing it in details cuz thinking sometime there needed to see overall 3D… next time will reduce the really unused one. Thankyou for advices…

From 739 MB to 250 MB after Purge: https://we.tl/t-r9KBaRCC8S
Still, this is not how a model should look in SketchUp, it’s much too big for a few rooms and furniture. Learn about low-poly models.

Thanks a lot… one more…sorry want to ask, is it possible for the low-poly model can give realistic outcome?

help me!! “Failed to open document error”"

Over 16 million edges

When you work on the model, keep only the respective tag on, turn off the rest.
Import low-poly models from 3D Warehouse, and not directly into your model.

Basics of SketchUp at learn.sketchup.com and learn about groups, components and tags.

A lot of raw geometry

Wouldn’t hurt to fix incorrect tag usage.

And reduce the ridiculously large texture files.

I reduced the largest 77 texture files and reduced the file size by 36%. You could also stand to go through the entourage in your model and give it all a serious clean up. Here are a couple examples. Do these tumblers really need to have over 47 thousand entities?

And the wine glasses. Nearly 89 thousand entities.

Does the excessive amount of detail in those objects add something really important to the model? Consider those woven plant baskets, too. Amazingly huge contribution to file size but not really a huge part of the overall model.

i’m having the exact same issue. Did you find a fix?

The most common reason for this problem in this thread is the users allowing their models to get out of control with file bloat. Share your .skp file so we can see if we can help you.

Hi Colin, can you help me with recovering my file as well? Dropbox - 2023-0721 Wilson TH.skp - Simplify your life

You’ll need to share your file.

What operating system are you using? You answered 64-Bit to that question in your forum profile but that’s not an answer. If Windows, do you also have the .skb version of the file you can share? @colin might have luck with it but your .skp file looks to be very badly corrupted.

Most of the file is filled with zeros. I couldn’t recover anything from the file.

In your experience, is file bloat the result of a drawing growing wildly in size (dimensionally), or more often due to the addition of assets from the file warehouse (etc.)?

The one time I downloaded an asset the file size was ridiculously huge for a physically small object. On inspection it was composed of literally dozens of nested groups. Every time I exploded the asset I found more groups within. (In the end I deleted it and created my own asset.)
