Sketchup doesn't start

Hi Sketchup experts, I am new to Sketchup and student working on my assignment. Been working fine for last whole month. Today, when I click on sketchup, I get the basic window and then I click on opening a new file, then the window disappears and nothing happens. Sketchup doesnt open.

I click on Task Manager and sketchup is not running. I uninstalled and reinstalled sketchup 2025 desktop, but still the same issue. I am in panic mode as all of my assignment is in the sketchup file.

I can open Layout though.

I had been working on sketchup whole day yesterday and today it wont open!

I have 64GB Dell Alienware laptop with NVIDIA GEForce RTX 4090.

Please see image attached for display adapters, these are up to date

Looking for help!!!

Did you installed it as administrator? That means right clicking on the installer and run as administrator, if you haven’t done that do it, a window will appear, there select repair.

Have you installed extensions recently? I had that issue some time ago, the extension migrator plugin was the cause of the crashes. I uninstalled it and everything went right again.

Don’t trust on the windows drivers updates, it’s better to install the Nvidia software previously known as GeForce experience, or download the latest drivers from the Nvidia website.

Thank you for replying. I right-clicked on the sketchup icon and clicked on ‘Run as administrator’, and nothing happens. It was working fine until yesterday.

And I also uninstalled whole sketchup app and installed it again. But still the same issue

try using revo unistaller, then re install with rigth click admin Sketchup exe

revo???

I didn’t tell you to click on the sketchup icon, you must do it on the sketchup installer, the one you downloaded from the sketchup website. There’s no need to uninstall.

Now I clicked on Sketchup.exe and right clicked and ‘run as adminstrator’, clicked on repair. After that same issue.

You didn’t answer this.

You can also download sketchup 2024 and try to use it.

yes I have been installing extensions, how can I remove them?

ok Ill try to download sketchup 2024 now

So I removed 2025 sketchup and installed 2024. It is working now. I need to install extensions again. But would this mean I should never upgrade to 2025??

You shouldn´t have uninstalled Sketchup 2025, you still can use both versions on the same machine, I recommend you to install it again, if you havent deleted some files, it´s possible that all your extensions are still ther, then on sketchup 2024 go to extension warehouse and install extension migrator, install all the extensions from 2025 and see if it works.

No, It means that there is something that is causing sketchup to crash without giving a bugsplat, I bet it´s an extension, we´ll have to keep investigating and testing. Have you downloaded the Nvidia software?

download it and intall is as I told you to do with sketchup, right click on the installer and run as administrator. install the latest drivers and reboot your system, Personally I use the studio drivers, I don´t know if there´s a big difference with the gaming drivers, I´m not an avid gamer but I haven’t had any problems gaming with the studio drivers installed.

Thanks heap for your response. Much appreciated. I will work on that and let you know.

I installed 2025 again and opened 2024 sketchup and applied extension migrator. I was able to use 2024 sketchup but the problem with 2025 persists. How can i remove installed extensions in 2025 sketchup?

In the past I have inserted a component from the Skp warehouse, and it has messed up the program and/or the file. So, beware of models by others, download them first and open in a new model to see how it behaves.

I am experiencing the same problem with SketchUp 2025. I believe it happened after a Windows update. Could anyone help? I’ve tried all the above solutions, but nothing has worked. SketchUp 2024 and 2023 are working fine.

The next update from us has some fixes in it that hopefully will cure the kind of crash you have seen.

The problem is related to when your sign in credentials expire. That is, if it’s been 28 days, instead of being asked to sign in again, a crash can happen.

You may be able to work around the issue by deleting the file that records your login time. In File Explorer, go to this folder:

%AppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\

When you get there, delete the file named login_session.dat. Try opening SketchUp again.
