Sketchup Pro 2025 on Windows 10 Pro (Intel Xeon E5, 32GB RAM, NVidia K2200 4GB graphics card) keeps crashing catastrophically - it stops working and everything other than music ceases to work. It is not possible to open the Task Manager the only way to exit is to turn off the computer.
There does not appear to be any particular cause - no single command, other programs running, etc. It has occurred with files that contain no 3D warehouse elements and straightforward models. Due to the only way of getting started again being to crash the computer it is not creating bug splats.
It had been doing this with existing files which, whilst annoying, meant the loss of work was minimal as the recovery file was available but it has started to do this with new files too. Today’s crash occurred in a file with three rectangles and a few guidelines - ie nothing complex. Unfortunately, it also happened before I had saved the file and can, therefore, not attach a copy.
I would appreciate any ideas to resolve the problem
First, open Task Manager before you open SketchUp, and open SketchUp without a document, so there’s nothing to render yet. Did you get a bugsplat, and can you share the crash #?
Thanks.
There was no bug splat nor crash #. I assume this was because I physically crashed the computer.
There were no renders involved.
When this has occurred previously I have tried to have Task Manager open whilst using Sketchup but no unusual processes showed up - no high CPU or GPU %s but I will try now.
NB I have disabled all but ‘Add location’ and ‘Dynamic compnents’ in Extension manager and SU has not crashed yet (and I have saved early, just in case)
It appears that Add Location may be the culprit. I have worked on a file that is Geolocated and it promptly crashes the machine when exiting. I will try turning this off and see what happens
Running Task Manager when it last crashed and there were no extraordinary increases - SU was using c 300Mb of memory and c. 0.1%GPU. All processes froze when the crash occurred, usually when an app crashes the other programs and tasks carry on
I don’t know what happens under the hood in Add Location, but Google Maps satellite view in Chrome often freezes down my computer. SketchUp doesn’t use Google as a source for location data, but I still wonder…
It appears that the way to guarantee a crash is to save a file that is geolocated through Add location. Even with Add location disabled it occurs each time. Kitchen.skp (6.5 MB)
I have attached the file that is causing the problem (today). Please excuse the random nature of the file - it started off as a quick test and developed into something else - unless, of course, my haphazard workflow is causing the problem
If I have your file open in SketchUp 2025, what action should I do to see a problem? I tried saving the file, then updated Add Location, and saved again. No problems so far.
The file crashes when I save. I have tried with Add location disabled but the problem persists. I wondered whether it had anything to do with ‘Purge unused’ option which I have selected on that file in the past.
I cannot find this folder either. I have searched for WER folder and an event log entitled WER-PayloadHealth%4Operational. This contains an event that would correspond with the time of the first crash yesterday. Details below
Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-WER-PayloadHealth/Operational

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:
I have opened the file in SU2024 without any issues except that I received a BugSplat upon opening for the first time - Crash #1030180 and . All extensions are enabled but Add location has not been updated.
Prior to opening the file I ran the SU2024 Checkup, which I appreciate isn’t relevant to SU2025, and no issues were highlighted.
I have saved ‘down’ to SU2024 and will attempt to open again in SU2025.
I looked at your 2024 crash, and a 2025 one as well. In both cases SketchUp crashed while showing the welcome screen. Is there anything unusual about your network? Could you try a test where you are using a phone as a hotspot, and see if less crashing happens?
