I am running sketchup 2017 on a 2016 Macbook pro 15" (high sierra 10.13). Was working fine until it crashed one day and now fails to open when the application is launched (just immediately shuts down and gives a ‘unexpected shutdown’ error message and prompts to reopen the last project which also crashes). I have tried reinstalling sketchup as well as deleting the preferences files (nothing was in there). Any Suggestions?
open SU from Finder or Dock while holding the Shift key down…
does it open a new empty model?
john
Same problem here. Was fine until today. Crashed while being used, now crashes on start.
It did mention updating plugins, which it has never done before).
Holding shift while laughing makes no difference.
Do you have the latest version of SketchUp 2017 installed? 2017.3.xxxx
Yes
Have re-installed today to try and cure problem - no luck.
SU 2016 still working ok, but obviously any files opened in 2017 no longer open in 2016
Might be you that the minimum requirements of you’re system has reach the limits with the combination of high sierra and sketchup2017?
It has been running fine until today.
Where are SU pref files stored now - I may try renaming them to see if they are causing the problem.
binning or renaming the plist files will make little difference unless you read up on how to bypass the the way apple stores identical copies for use when they go missing…
personally, I have never had a corrupt plist in over 14 yrs of SU abuse and doubt it’s been a solution for many years…
did you try opening with shift as I suggested to the OP…
it should open a ‘clean’ new model…
if it does the model is the culprit…
report back for further steps…
john
Yes, as I mentioned in reply to earlier post, holding shift makes no difference (mind you, auto correct did change my reply to ‘holding shift while laughing…’ instead of launching.
I just find it strange that all has worked fine until today. Upon first launch today a dialog I have never seen before popped up asking if I want to update various plugins. After about an hour of working normally SU shut down and bug reporter window appeared. Now as soon as I try to launch SU Make from the splash screen the bug reporter appears.
Deleted all plist files related to Sketchup, ignored dialog box offering to update 3 extensions - all working again with the original sketchup file, so it was ok.
The other person fixed their issue, @jboydh did yours get fixed? Can you add details to the crash report that I can search for it and find out what’s causing yours?
I ended up just using time machine to revert back to before the crashes started occurring and that fixed the issue. If it comes up again I’ll give what Sooty did a shot. Thanks!
I had a similar problem with crashes on startup on Windows when I was in power save mode. Maybe you’ve touched the power saving settings?
Good point. Many computers have two graphics cards, and in power save mode, they switch to the lower powered (typically Intel) graphics card.
I opened SU /w Shift key, it starts to load the program and then crashes /w bug splat. I never get to loading a file.

Looks like a Ruby crash. Disable plugins / extensions.
I can’t even open up the app to get to preferences before it crashes. I showed package contents and removed it and it is still bug splattering at launch.
You could temporarily rename the plugin directory to avoid SketchUp loading it.
