Sketchup crashes on recent 2024 update

I installed the 2024-0-594-241 update a few days ago and now SU crashes on opening any project even a new basic template. I sent in bugcrash and went through the troubleshooting and it seems that when i have the new graphics setting enabled it just crashes. It was working fine on the prior release. Where can i download the one prior to 594?

I see your crashes, and they do appear to be rendering-related. Major versions are https://help.sketchup.com/en/downloading-older-versions, and I’ve been out of the loop on this one to know the URL for a 2024.0 or older minor version. I’ll keep digging.

I’m replying to Barry too but just in case any of you have seen this. The problem seems to be when i open SU on my laptop monitor while the new graphics engine is enabled. SU works fine with the older graphics engine. i did see another issue with something similar but no resolution. I have an HP laptop VICTUS with an NVIDIA RTX 4060 card. It worked fine before the latest update. I already did update to the latest video drivers (sept) and still the same issue. Any ideas: here is it in action:

Which of the two displays is set as the main (primary) Windows display?

P.S.: I am unable to reproduce under Win 11 & a Nvidia GTX 1060 with my external UHD display set as the main display. I can maximize to the secondary internal notebook display without crashing.

I wonder, do you have any extensions installed that watch the model view using observers?

The primary display is set to the external monitor. I swapped the primary display with the laptop monitor and the results are the same. I Have no extensions installed as ive been completely removing SU and config directories (appdata) and installing from scratch for testing. I also have uninstalled my graphics drivers and reinstalled with no change. it seems like a graphics driver issue. Barry gave me a link to the SU24 update prior to the current one (584-241) and it behaves the same way so im not sure anymore. Im 99% sure i was running the latest prior to the current update but its crashing too As far as watchers im not sure what you mean. like rendering syncing windows? just in case i went ahead and uninstalled D5 and Twilight Render and Vray. rebooted and still the same crashing.

When you installed SketchUp did you do it in the correct way ?
There’s no need to uninstall.
Close SketchUp.
Find the installer’s exe file - usually in you Downloads folder.
If not re-download it…
Select the exe file’s icon, right-click > context-menu > Run as administrator.
In the dialog that opens choose ā€˜Repair’.
When it’s done reboot your PC to see if anything has changed…
Double-clicking an installer’s exe file to Run it, is not the same thing - even if your user-account has admin powers.

no, ive never installed sketchup that way. (right click as admin) ill try that

using Gforce experience (the app) ? because I have the older version of your computer, one with a 3050 rtx, no problem on my end, but there was a driver update last week I think.
Windows update system is not always actually up to date when it comes to these things

i was using the geforce experience app and then i tried to update the drivers and was having some issues, in the nividia forums they recommended the NVIDIA app instead so I’m currently using that with the latest drivers.

what version of drivers are you on?

here are mine:

same as you, 565.90
funny, mine came on oct. 1st, probably some timezone thing
my CPU is a 11thgen i5-11400h 2.7GHz and I have 32GB ram as well.
however, my screen is a 1080p, so is the secondary one I did my test on.

i did try the right click and run as admin and then repair and reboot. same issue

This is a known issue with multi-monitor setup. Let me suggest a possible solution.

  1. Power down your laptop and power back up.
  2. Hook up the LG monitor and make the default monitor from the Display menu. (r-click on the Desktop and select ā€˜Display settings.’
  3. Launch SU and it should appear on the LG monitor.
Note: You can still disconnect the LG and SU will appear on your laptop, but if you reconnect the monitor make sure that the LG monitor is the default monitor before launching SU everytime. On bootup SU looks at which monitor is the default monitor and those settings so your laptop cannot be the default on launching. Also, once on the LG monitor you can’t move SU to you laptop while open. Each time you want to move SU to another display you have to make that display the default and relaunch. I apologize this is such an odd issue that won’t be fixed till the next release.

Could you please let me know if this fixes your issue? Thanks, kath

Hi, I am having this same issue & tried this fix. Sketchup opens when i use the other monitior as default but when i try to drag it back to my laptop it bug splats again. Any suggestions?

just curious, what version of SU are you on and how long has it been happening?

2024 version. I have been intermittently getting bug splats for probably the past 2 months, however the last few weeks its been more and more and today its been every time I go to open it. I did all the things it says to do, uninstall, reinstall, restart etc and its still not working

That method does not work for me, if i understand it correctly. I can make my external monitor the default (it already is) and i can launch SU in (new graphic mode) and it works. if i then unplug the hdmi cable to the external monitor while SU is maximized on the external monitor it immediately crashes.
Im hopeful that this will be resolved since it seems like you guys already know about it. i can deal with older graphics engine if i need to edit on my laptop.

There have been some quirky problems with some machines using HDMI.

A slim possibility is to try using another type of connection (DisplayPort, USB3, etc.,) if available. I don’t hold much hope however.

Regardless if an application crashes or not I don’t think that it is very smart to do that. I turn my computer off before making hardware changes.

Thats a good test: Same issue however. I do have a usb c connection that i sometimes use to connect to my external monitor, so i tried that. Support also asked me to completely disconnect from the internet and not use any cloud storage (as ive always used google drive to store my models on and work from) So a completely disconnected laptop, google drive turned off (no mounted cloud devices) SU still crashes when i load a template from the welcome page while enabling the new graphics engine and when SU is displayed on my laptop screen. works on the external monitor via hdmi/usb c

Another culprit sometimes is that the ā€œPrivatePreferences.jsonā€ file gets corrupted.

  1. Close SketchUp

  2. Navigate to:
    %LocalAppData%/SketchUp/SketchUp 2024/SketchUp

  3. Rename the "PrivatePreferences.json" file to something else, say "PrivatePreferences_backup.json"

  4. Restart SketchUp and it will regenerate the file.

You’ll lose all the tray and panel setups and where you docked toolbars, but see if this fixes the crash.

If not you can reverse steps, deleting the new json file, and rename the old one back to its original name. Then restart SketchUp again.
