SketchUp and macOS High Sierra

(a) shift click to open actually opens no documents
does not work, still crashes

(b) when you open ANY app, like TextEdit, and hit cod-shift-C and you have no Chiclet colors
I have no saved colors down in the boxes

thank you for still trying… maybe I have to reinstall my OS?

That seems drastic, but I don’t have a better solution because I can’t reproduce this crash. I even tried it in German on High Sierra. It’s strange that you have no chiclets, yet it appears that’s how it’s crashing. Maybe add a chiclet or two, both in SketchUp and other apps, and see? I’m at a loss right now, but I’ll keep thinking about it.

When I draw a rectangle it is not generating a face with 2017 Make on a Mac Book Pro Sierra. Latest version is installed. Am I missing something?

By “latest version” do you mean 17.3.116?

Do you have Face Style set to Wireframe?

I may have. I was drawing top view over a floorplan jpeg.

I updated SU 2017 in September before I update OSX. I understood that the SU update addressed the issue found during High Sierra beta testing.

I PM’d @james_b_sapp, and this was meant for another forum post, so please ignore for this context.

We found the culprit, thank you for helping us find it. Please quit, SketchUp, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app, and type in or paste (whichever version you’re crashing in - 2017, for example):

defaults delete com.sketchup.SketchUp.2017 “NSWindow Frame NSColorPanel”

and hit Return. Then restart SketchUp. It should be noted: don’t drag Materials added by SketchUp to the Favorite Swatches panel at the bottom of the NSColorPanel, or this crash may happen again.

to avoid curly quote errors, copy paste this one,

defaults delete com.sketchup.SketchUp.2017 'NSWindow Frame NSColorPanel'

EDIT: the forum isn’t honouring straight quotes in code blocks, so fix them after paste…

I just downloaded High Sierra on my 2011 iMac. I should of read the warnings about to not do this but I did not see them in time:( I now have to shut down the software and restart every time I click into the nested areas of a saved group. It literally kicks out my Entity Info Tool. It causes it to stop working completely and I can only restore it when I shut down the program and restart it. It is not a “one off” problem but it does it every time. It also does not cause a “Bug Splat” box to pop up either, I guess because it doesn’t cause the program to freeze up. When the Entity Info tool drops out, I can still click on other items it just no longer show up in the Entity Info box. I have never had this problem before upgrading to High Sierra yesterday. Does any one have any suggestions?

That’s a new one. Are you running SketchUp 17.3? Did you format your hard drive case-sensitive? What plugins do you have installed besides those that come with SketchUp? On my machine that repros a lot of these issues, I can’t reproduce it.

Please provide some more information about your setup. What version of SketchUp are you running (open the SketchUp->About SketchUp menu to see the detailed version number)? SketchUp versions are generally not assured to be compatible with OS versions released after the SketchUp version, though there was a maintenance release 17.3.116 to deal with some issues with High Sierra. Are you using, or have you used multiple displays?

Hi Barry,
I am running 17.3.116, as far as plug ins I do not know where to find a list of them.

Hi slbaumgartner,
I am running 17.3.116

OK, if you don’t know of plugins, you probably haven’t installed any. What about APFS case-sensitivity? Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app, select your hard drive and type command-I (that’s an I, not an L). Is your volume type APFS? And for “Is case-sensitive” is it Yes or No?

Also I am using an additional display

Hi Barry
Screen Shot 2017-11-09 at 3.21.16 PM.pdf (50.5 KB)

I have tried to copy the PDF copy of the screen shot here. But in case it does not work, Volume Type: Physical Volume, Is Case Sensitive: No

Ah, so you do not have a SSD or Fusion Drive, so your High Sierra stayed HFS+ (the older Apple File system). Most of the systems I test on have SSD’s, which Apple converts to their new file system APFS. And even on HFS+, you’re not case-sensitive (Unix systems are this way, Mac & Windows are not, they’re case-respecting). So that eliminates a few variables. I’ll try to see if I can find a system closer to yours, because I can’t reproduce what you’re seeing. Anyone else on High Sierra get anything like this? Is it a specific model you can share?

Thanks Barry, This is a mid 2011 iMac 27". Let me know if there is more information on this specific computer
