Hello, I am hoping someone can help. Sketchup is taking 2 minutes to open for me. This happens when I am opening a file I’m working on, and on a new sketchup drawing without any information or template, and if I double click an icon to open, and if I open sketchup by itself and then open a file.
I’ve gone through multiple discussions with trimble tech support, they have checked my computer set up, Nvidia card driver-- Not the problem.
They have not been able to replicate the problem with the file I sent them, which indicates to me this is likely a windows or other system problem.
Here are the things I’ve already tried, which have NOT solved the problem:
change plugin folder, so no plugins load.–this is not the problem.
go into windows defender, and make sketchup an exception so it is not interacting incorrectly with defender. Defender does not appear to be the problem.
Can anyone think of something else this may be interacting with that would cause the delay in opening?
I assume you are using 2026 and your profile is out of date?
Locate where your temporary files reside, a location something like (on a Mac) Library>Application Support>SketchUp>Working.
Move the files you see there out of the folder to another location and restart SketchUp. I have had issues where a corrupt autosave file would make things horribly slow or not load at all.
Two minutes is definitely not normal, especially if it also happens with a brand-new empty model.
Out of curiosity, how large is the file you’re usually opening? If you’re comfortable sharing it, I’d be happy to take a look and see if there’s anything unusual in the model itself that could be contributing to the delay.
on my training PC, I have around 30-40 plugins, some really big (renderers, scan essential…) and it can take a solid 40-50sec of white screen while it loads…
but this is the odd part. no plugin means no excess loading time, yet they still have it.
where did you install sketchup ? standard location (:C I believe) or another drive inside your machine ? and are the default files (plugins, stuff like that) on the same drive ?
does your machine use an old school hard drive or ssd ?
(it reminds me of people installing games on a drive but having some of the files on another drive making saves and loads very slow. hence the ask)
Yep, that’s exactly what I was trying to suggest.
Could be a fairly decent loading time if you have gazillions of extensions like i do.. but it’s absolutely abnormal with no plugins at all.
i have helped customers before where things are slow and it simply turned out they had said their machine to “low energy or best efficiency” which slows the machine down quite significantly.
if you have a laptop or device with a battery this setting will be there.
make sure it’s set up “best performance”
If it’s hot where you are , the machine will also be throttling its speed anyway in order to keep its temps down.
If you have the SketchUcation toolset installed - then rather than use the Extension Manager [ which actually partially-loads an extension even if it’s been ‘disabled’ ] to control what’s loading you can use the SketchUcation tools’ Plugins manager - this stops the extension ever loading at all [after SketchUp restarts], which avoids any time lag at all, from unused / little used extensions and plugins.
As well as ‘Disable’ [Unload], its dialog also allows you to ‘Load-Permanently’ and ‘Load-Temporarily’ [only for that session]…
The two panes show what’s Loaded and what’s Disabled [Unloaded]. You can also make and save your own ‘Sets’ to have various collections of plugins/extensions - that you can then load into your session as you need them…
The free SketchUcation toolset not only offers Plugins Management, but the ExtensionStore dialog which allows auto-install of hundreds of extensions and plugins from their PluginStore and manage ‘Bundles’ of extensions for bulk installation across version/computer changes, the exclusive SCF Licensing and management tools for extensions such as Fredo6’s etc, the Archive [RBZ/ZIP] Installer, a Plugin Uninstaller [similar to the Manager UI dialog], and several Utilities - e.g. to open your Plugins and Template folders [without the need to navigate hidden folders etc], Toolbar toggle options to hide/show the toolbar if updates are available for your extensions [via the ExtensionStore], and a tool to list all of your Shortcuts clearly in a dialog. https://sketchucation.com/pluginstore?pln=SketchUcationTools
Did you install correctly by right-clicking on the installer and choosing “run as administrator”? If not, do so. This gives SketchUp the right permissions in Windows.
