SketchUp 2026 closes immediately when opening any model

Hello,

I installed SketchUp Pro 2026 (latest version) from the official website using the 7-day trial.

The installation completes successfully and SketchUp opens normally to the Welcome screen.

However, as soon as I click on any template to create a new model, or try to open any existing .skp file, SketchUp closes instantly without any error message or BugSplat report.

We have already tried:

  • Reinstalling SketchUp.
  • Updating Windows.
  • Updating NVIDIA and Intel graphics drivers.
  • Installing/updating Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables.
  • Running SketchUp as Administrator.
  • Forcing SketchUp to use the NVIDIA GPU.
  • Resetting SketchUp preferences.
  • Testing environment variables suggested on the SketchUp forum.
  • Checking Windows Event Viewer (no crash event is generated).

Other 3D applications such as Blender and Promob work normally on this computer.

Could you please help identify the cause or let me know if this is a known issue with SketchUp 2026?

Thank you.

Welcome to the group! In my case, it’s because some extensions fail to load. Interestingly, the ones that fail are Trimble-developed extensions like Scan Essentials, Dynamic Components, Advanced Camera Tools, Revit Importer, etc. I just stopped sending the BugSplat reports because I’ve sent so many and there is no fix for it. I have pinged some Trimble employees, but no one answers to give me a solution. Every time I open a file—even if it’s a new one—I have to try at least 5 times, ignoring the BugSplats and reopening it, until the file eventually opens. Sometimes I am lucky and it takes just one or two tries, but usually it’s more than 5 times.

I would say that the MX450 is old and at the very bottom of ability for recent SketchUp versions.

But it still should load. Your profile does not say what Windows version you machine is running. SU2026 officially supports only Win 11, but may still run on Win 10.

When you installed SketchUp did you use the offline installer and right-click it and choose Run as administrator ?

If not rerun the installer as described and choose the Repair option.

Would see if there’s any relevant crash logs in the Windows Event Viewer related to the Sketchup executable. Might point to the faulting module/module path and give an idea on what might be going on. Probably not, but worth a check since no bug splat is being generated.

The OP said …

That’s what I get for skimming over the initial post, lol. Interesting that no crash event is getting generated, though.. Hmm…

Sometimes I find it easier to manually check the ReportArchive subfolder at:
%ProgramData%/Microsoft/Windows/WER for a file beginning either:

  • `“AppCrash_SketchUp.exe_” …
  • `“AppHang_SketchUp.exe_” …

… for the time and date when SketchUp would not open. The information is all technical and likely not much use to users who do not have the application codebase.

Same for CrashDump files which are a snapshot of memory. They can be in several different locations:

  • %LocalAppData%/CrashDumps
  • %WinDir%/MiniDump

I’m having this exact same problem. Bought the pro version today, download and install first time, crashes every time I try to just load any scene, no error no nothing, no logs. Program just closes immediately. Updated windows, graphics drivers, did everything people suggest online. Nothing. What a great program!

Looks like some untested spagetti code in their latest installer probabaly, using SketchUp-2026-2-243-76 exe

EDIT: Running LayOut 2026 works fine…whatever that is.

I’m on a Mac, so specifics may differ but anyway, when I’ve checked the system crash reports after a “disappear with no BugSplat” event, I’ve usually found the app aborted itself (as opposed to being killed by the OS). Because the bugsplat trap is embedded in the app, it goes down along with SketchUp with no chance to act. Almost all the cases I have examined were related to graphics issues.

If you ever used AutoCAD, LayOut is the paper space editor for deliverable engineering documents. (It uses viewports that look into model space.)

so it seems this is an unfixable problem? Until maybe the next release?

well it’s difficult to diagnose when none of the tools that exist to tell you something’s wrong tells you what’s going on…

SketchUp 2026 was released on October 7, 2025 so probably yes but it’s impossible to know actually, SketchUp 2025 was released on April 2025.
