Good catch.
For architectural work, I’d say until we can have greater control of section fills and section cut linework, this doesn’t go far enough. I was encouraged when the article Mark links to about this new feature showed a remodel plan with demo elements dashed, but my hopes were dashed when I realized that the image is misleading, and that appearance can still only happen if the demo walls are 2D elements. Can it be coded that the section linework is set by the settings for the tag of the content it’s cutting? And being able to opt out of section fills for certain groups and components would be a super-handy feature to enable the image SketchUp is putting out there to promote these new features.
So far so good. I really enjoy the changes to layout and it is definitely going to decrease the amount of viewports that need to be stacked considerably.
Now comes the question of consistency between the two platforms – I believe the general rule is that settings exist in the same place in both platforms and can be “overridden” in Layout no different that how you can override tags & styles already.
CONSISTENCY SUGGESTIONS:
Set line type via tag in SKP
- already possible to set a line type to a tag – great
- add new drop down under Edge Style to decide if line type is “all same” or “by layer”
- add settings under Edge Style to configure what “all same” means
Set line scale via tag in SKP
- add ability to set a line scale to a tag in SKP
- add new drop down under Edge Style to decide if line scale is “all same” or “by tag”
- add settings under Edge Style to configure what “all same” means
Set line color via tag in SKP
- add new drop down option under Edge Color in Styles to decide if line color is “by tag”, as opposed to having to go to the tag panel/styles and color the entire model “by tag”, and then switching edge color to “by material” – this is confusing and inconsistent.
I also agree with the general comments about greater control of section fills and section cut linework as well.
Keep it up! making solid progress
Tag line style overrides do not apply to Section cuts.
Hi Dave,
Thanks for this, though it seems it would be a very painful workflow as it wouldn’t update once geometry is changed… or would it ?
Seems to me like the usual hashes put above cut through views in layout (like I’m currently doing) is still easier for changes.
Let me know if I’m mistaken

Wow, not sure how I missed that.
Thanks!
Re: LayOut
Hi Team,
Line Style control, Great! So far working perfectly and easily.
Also have noticed great improvement in moving objects around, Thanks!
Keep them coming

This feature will be really worth it for me when:
- we can have complex models flowing fast in layout;
- tags in a viewport are exported to a CAD file into corresponding layers.
Until then I have to keep stacking viewports so nothing fundamental changed for me.
I need changes that really make a difference for an architectural workflow and for bigger models.
It’s still painful to deal with those.
Having said that I feel improvements have been made in speed. I haven’t run any tests that can prove anything, it’s just a overall feeling from working with the software.
There are also some other features that are not major but are meaningful for me.
Dear Mark,
thanks for the query.
yesterday, I downloaded the 2020.2 update and installed the new version on top of the existing SU Pro 2020 version , and when I opened Layout everything was working well. I tried a few things to see what had changed, and I noticed the Tags tab was showing clearly and it was easy to change the linetypes in LO.
I think that is a fairly useful update and will save time and be more fluid pipeline wise.
However, when I went in today from SU to LO, I find that my Layout has reverted (perhaps, I have no idea) to an earlier version in that today, the Tags tab/palette has gone and in its place is now a Layers tab.
I just want to make sure I am not dreaming, but this is not how things were yesterday. the only change is that late last night, Microsoft, made a reasonable sized update to my Windows 10 OS.
In the past , and very regularly it seems, whenever MS does a Win 10 update things often turn to custard somewhere, like drivers suddenly go funny, or shortcuts disappear or some things become corrupted even, it can be very frustrating but at other times there are just no issues at all.
I suspect the Win10 update last night has mucked up SU somehow ?
I guess I might have to either try re-installing the yesterday’s update to 2020.2, over the top of the existing installation, or totally un-install SU and start all over again.
Which would you expect to to be the most prudent. ?
thank you
I believe, that your 2020.2 may still be intact.
Since you mention Layers when starting SU, possibly you opened your model w the 2019 version.
Look forward to learning if this observation helps.
I have been waiting for this update for a long time so was pleasantly surprised to see it. Its working great, layout seems to be working smoother as well.
That’s the layers panel.
The tag override control is in the SketchUp Model panel.
Sweeeeet, thanks for that !
Now just the contour profile thickness toggle in Layout needed…
In Skup, it can be changed, but it doesn’t seem to work for complex components made out of several other components. ex : object X, is made of components A, B, C i will have a profile on A, B and C and X.
Which means that if I want to have a thicker line around X, it will apply to A,B,C and X making it very unclear.
Or maybe it’d be nice to have two types of profiles, exterior and interior ?
Any ideas ?
Arh I can’t seem to be able to change texture in Section Cut face… any ideas ?
I haven’t used this extension for some time but I suspect if you haven’t any you need to add your pattern as a material and it will/should appear in the drop down box…
click the documentation tab
Ok managed to do that - annoying thing though texture doesn’t update after being created in this plugin.
Couldn’t you guys update directly in Skup the section fill box to accept textures ?
Yeah I figured it out - annoying thing though texture doesn’t update after being created in this plugin - ex. once the cut created you can’t change the texture size
Wouldn’t it be easier for you guys to update the section fill box to accept textures directly in Skup ?
Blimey, missed that thank you and oops.
