There is an issue we’ve been trying to figure out for a couple of years, where you are working on a complex model, and you want to add something from 3D Warehouse. As you do that, the download of the model happens quickly, but then it can be several minutes before the model appears in your scene. Short version is, if you open the Colors palette and select any materials set other than Colors in Model, does the import still happen slowly?
