Save as Template is not saving tags and styles to the default template

SU 2025 25.0.660
Windows 11 Pro 24H2

Preferences/General/Ask to Purge at Save: OFF

I have a SU template and I’m attempting to add a style and a tag. When I make the changes and attempt to Save as Template with Set as default template checked, the tag and style I add are deleted. I checked in the templates folder in appdata and it shows the current save date and time correctly. When I create a new drawing within SU using ^N, my default template loads but the adds are missing.

As a workaround, I opened the template from file explorer, made the changes, saved and exited SU. When I opened SU again, the template loaded with the added style, but not the added tag.

I’ve been using Sketchup for a lot of years and have never run into this issue before.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Odd. I just tested and it is working for me.

Could you try just saving the file with changes? If that is working, you could then move it to the Templates folder.

You could also try using an extension for the tags: Tag and Folder Profiles | SketchUp Extension Warehouse

In SketchUp’s Preferences turn off the Purge All at Save feature.

Then set up your template and save it.

Pleae update your forum profile. It says you’re still using SketchUp 2022.

I tried that, to no avail. I did notice that the tag disappeared when I hit ^S to save. I didn’t even complete the save - cancelled out and the tag was still gone.

I turned off that option the day I installed SU25.

Do you have an extension that automatically purges unused stuff from the model. Before posting I created a new template with an added, unused style and three or four unused tags. I saved it as a Template when when I start a new file using it, I have the additional style and tags. Nothing has been purged from the file.

Current extensions are
CabinetSense - I’ve been using it for years
Profile Builder 4 - also for years
SketchPlus - 2-3 years
Bevel - 2-3 years
Double cut - 2-3 years

All have been used for quite some time without this issue.

I disabled them all and tried again without success.

Here’s evidence that it works on my PC. Starts from my normal default template and then doing New from Template and selecting the one I made as a test.

Something’s different.

Here is mine…

What happens if you give it a different name so you aren’t overwriting an existing file?

It’s weird that on Save the tag goes away. It shouldn’t do that.

Agreed!

Same thing happens. I’ve tried renaming, creating a blank file and then reopening it. The only thing that gets it to stick is if I actually apply the tag to something. However, once I delete that something, the tag disappears on save. Maybe time to reinstall SU25?

BTW, appreciate the feedback @DaveR and @3DxJFD!

Just a thought. Turn on Ask to Purge All at Save. Then create the template with the tags and additional style(s) and save it. When it prompts you to Purge, tick the box for Don’t ask again and click No.

Good thought - that actually worked. I even added a new tag and it saved properly. If we ever cross paths, drinks are on me! Thank you.

Open new file. Add tag.

File → Save As Template (New Name).

Dave beat me too it but the Purge Unused prompt pops up for me and I select “No”.

Pic that Dave already shared but I'm sharing anyway :)

yeah, whatever these guys said.

I had it too, but I saw Dave was typing stuff so I thought "meh, he’s got it  "

Good. FWIW, if early on you had gotten that message, ticked the box and selected Yes, SketchUp would silently purge unused stuff every time you save. And I think if you just unticked the box in Preferences with ever making the choice it would also purge silently.

Looking forward to that drink.

Dave has caused me to ‘purge’ many replies. He’s too quick.
