hello, french furniture maker using Sketch for may years, It was a bit slow on my old macbook pro 2015 so I bought a new macbook pro M3 pro 2024… it’s really better BUT, I have a problem,
when I choose a tool, in the first few minutes it works normally but very quickly I can’t select my edge or my face… and that’s with the tape measure, the push-pull…etc
There have been some glitches like that reported with the new graphics engine. Try clicking outside the SketchUp window and then back inside. You could also try setting the classic graphics engine.
thank you for your answer, even if it’s working well "sometimes, I spend 6/8 hours a day on sketch for half of my time… this problems slowing me down a lot in my job… I hope ketchup and apple can fix that!
thanks
Fred
We did fix a few M3 specific issues in the update from a month ago. The remaining issues I know of could happen on any Mac, or even Windows.
You don’t have to remove 2023 to give 2024 a try. If something bad starts to happen the same files will open in 2023. It sounds like your new Mac may never have had 2023, but you could download it.
Also, try Check for Update in the 2024 SketchUp menu. Some of what you describe sounds like one of the main things we did fix in the update.
I’d like to add a few things to this list of issues. I just got a 2023 Macbook Pro with an M3 chip. Prior to this I have been using Sketchup Make on my 2013 Macbook Pro and it ran fine.
I’ve been using Sketchup for over ten years now and since getting this new computer, Sketchup Pro has been very buggy:
The drawing preview tools, ie, the path segments that should be visible when drawing line segments and arcs are not visible about 50% of the time. Sometimes I’ll toggle the ghost lines with ‘K’ but that’s clunky and doesn’t always work. This puts a huge dent in my workflow as it’s never been a problem with Sketchup Make.
When I am editing within a group, Command+6 which should be the ‘Right’ camera view flips to the left for some reason.
Sometimes when drawing a box or circle, the preview ghost lines will ‘follow’ my cursor in a very laggy way. It’s really hard to believe that this brand new computer would be having any trouble whatsoever with the graphic requirements for a modeler like Sketchup but these are occurring regularly. I understand that Apple might be at fault for this as well.
Also, while I’m shooting for the stars, is there any way we could get an update that allows movement of shapes/ lines/ groups in smaller increments? For example, in Adobe Illustrator you can specify how small to make the mouse movements when using the arrow keys. For some reason my parts keep snapping to the 1/16" of an inch when moving and extruding. To have some flexibility over these metrics would be great!
My Sketchup Pro is up to date and I’m using the older Graphic Settings option. Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you!
There have been reports of some errors with SU 2024 and the M3 specifically, however it’s worth exploring a bit. Can you attach one of your files that shows this behavior so we can evaluate?
SketchUP>Preferences>Graphics. Are you running the experimental or classic graphics engine?
Window>Model Info> Units : Do you have enable lenght snapping turned on (checked)? Turn it off.
I have been having the same issue for a while, first with 2023 and still with 2024 on my 2021 M1 MacBook. I had hoped it would be resolved with updates, but unfortunately the issue still persists with every graphics engine, performance or display setting. I have been in touch with Sketchup support and their suggestions haven’t helped yet, though it seems like they are aware of this bug.
The bugs being discussed in this thread are specific to the M3 only. I run SketchUp 24 on an M1 and it’s fast and crisp. We should not hijack this M3 thread but if you start a fresh thread about your issues we could try to get to the bottom of why your install feels slow.
Not trying to hijack any threads, but it sounded like Fred and I are experiencing the same issue in which selection function across tools suddenly and intermittently halts. I can’t speak to whether the issue is caused by the chip or anything else, as I really have no idea about it other than that it is extremely annoying! As I mentioned, I have been communicating with Sketchup support about it, and may start a new separate thread if I learn anything.
I have a fantastic PC Desktop but wanted to replace it with a laptop. I really expected the fully loaded MacBook Pro M3 Max to do the trick. I love and own many, MANY Apple products but I really struggled with how it worked with Sketchup. I use Sketchup everyday and need to to quickly execute projects big and small. I suffered with it a few days but ultimately gave up and passed the laptop on to my Wife. (She is thrilled!) I will stick with my desktop until some windows laptops that can compete. When I look at all that is offered currently, seems like I will be waiting a long time. Maybe Intel Lunar Lake or beyond???
hours, days, weeks and months pass and problems stayed!! I have every 3 minutes to go outside of the ketchup window and come back to have my tools working!! It’s really really a huge problem for my job!!!
Do u have any news for me and others Macbook pro M3 pro users??
thank u
Fred
We are now into November and the most recent update did not fix this issue with M3 Macs - in fact if anything it is worse and it is seriously decreasing productivity. What about releasing a hotfix for M3 users or is that too much to ask?
