Large amount of crashes for the past month or so

Hello. I have been troubleshooting this issue for about a week and finally decided to give up. I bought a new pc back in April and got everything jamming. The 5070TI was smoking through scenes. All of a sudden I was getting random crashes. There was no rhyme or reason. During idle, during renders, upon opening, etc. Probably about 50 during my troubleshooting. I submitted various ones.

Here’s a more concise rundown of the issue and everything I’ve tried so far:

:warning: Primary Symptoms

  • SketchUp 2025 crashes with or without BugSplat, often during or immediately after V-Ray GPU rendering (especially when denoising kicks in).
  • Occasionally crashes during simple modeling tasks with no rendering in progress. Often even during idle.
  • Crashes are inconsistent — sometimes I can complete multiple renders, other times it crashes immediately upon opening the model.
  • SketchUp 2023 appears stable on the same system.

:laptop: My Hardware Setup

  • Intel Core i9-14900KF
  • NVIDIA RTX 5070 Ti
  • 96GB DDR5 RAM
  • Windows 11 Pro
  • Fully updated BIOS, chipset, and drivers

:wrench: Steps I’ve Taken

  • Reinstalled SketchUp 2025 and V-Ray from scratch
  • Reset default paths to avoid OneDrive interference
  • Monitored system temps — GPU and CPU both stay within safe ranges (60–70°C)
  • Moved PC near AC unit with side panel open to maximize airflow
  • Ran Prime95 for hours — no CPU errors
  • Ran memtest and GPU stress tools — all passed without issue
  • Updated to latest NVIDIA Game Ready and Studio drivers
  • Tested with TdrDelay set to 8 (registry already had it)
  • Tested with and without NVIDIA denoiser (denoiser seems to trigger crash occasionally but not always)
  • Left PC off overnight to eliminate heat or memory residue issues
  • Switched from fast hybrid sleep mode to full shutdown/restart between sessions
  • Checked network stability and latency (only mild ping spikes)

Despite all of this, SketchUp 2025 still crashes frequently — especially when the V-Ray frame buffer is minimized or when rendering completes and attempts to denoise.

:counterclockwise_arrows_button: Other Notes

  • This same setup worked fine for months before issues began.
  • The instability seemed to appear suddenly without any major change to hardware or software (aside from possibly Windows updates or minor SketchUp revisions).
  • System behaves normally in all other apps and games — only SketchUp 2025 + V-Ray is affected.

Any ideas or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated. I’m close to the edge here trying to get this stable again.

Thanks!
—Gary

There are some threads discussing the same topic, since sketchup 2024 it uses a new graphics api which makes it perform a lot better but it still has some bugs that must be fixed, also sketchup 2025 added some features and improvements that are still being developed. Accordingly to some sketchup team members some bugs have being fixed and will be released with the next update, the problem is that Trimble is for some reason very secretive with future releases and they don’t have a public roadmap, for now we can keep using sketchup 2025 and reporting the crashes so they can be identified and use other stable versions in case you need a fluent workflow without crashes.

It’s cumbersome but it’s the price of development, I can’t tell much about the future of sketchup here, but I know that there are amazing tools and new features that will be added to sketchup that will make it a game changer software.

hmm.

maybe @colin can perhaps look at your Bugsplats and see where / when it crashes. (if you have a “fresh” bugsplat number it’ll help)
Also, since you mention crashes during Vray rendering, might be a good idea to go do a similar message on their forum. who knows, it could be something they already know ?

off course it won’t help your non-rendering crashes. Sorry.

if you switch sketchup 2025 to the classic engine, do you still get crashes ? (in preferences / graphics)
that would tell us if it’s SU+Vray or specifically DX12 related.

Could you share a file that crashes ? I don’t use Vray, but many here do, and they could try to run the same renderings as you to see if they crash as well… you know, ruling out the files themselves from the problem.

well at least the most important things — games — are safe

since you mention having many crashes related to vray, I’d say it’s worth trying to uninstall vray and simply work on SU without it.
not 100% a solution, SU might still crash for some reason, but massive extensions like that one can also cause issues even when not active. it’s worth trying, but I can’t tell you it’s gonna solve it all

Thank you for taking the time to respond. The splats or no splats have nothing in common. Could be any file I open or even no file at all. I could open 2025 right now on a blank template and within a half hour, I am sure it would either splat or just close. I did extensive troubleshooting before coming here. I completely removed vray and sketchup still crashed. I did try the classic graphics engine, no change. So its not just about rendering. I have had days where I could open a file, do a bunch of modeling and complete a few renderings before crashing. I just can pinpoint the issue. Sadly, not only would working without vray help, but it would completely ruin my workflow. I am building materials as I model. I guess I will just stick with 2023 until something changes. I also tried 2024 but I had a weird issue where all menus would pop up on my second monitor making that unusable as well. 2023 has been completely stable. Its only really frustrating because I worked on 2025 for months with no issues. I do run updates when notified. Like from Vray but I even tried to download previous versions and the issues still persist.

oh yeah, that was a classic 2024 thing. what a year -_-"

that’s… odd to say the least.
do you have the autosave turned on ? could it be related ? (completely not the case at hand, but SU17 on new macs crash upon saving, meaning the autosave is like a ticking bomb…)

I assume you also repaired the install ? right click on the installer / run as admin / repair ?

I don’t have access to the bugsplats, and I don’t really know how to read them either, it’s midday in Colorado, I hope someone can take a look at the reports ? (I already pinged Colin, I’ll add @Barry for good measure)

indeed. let’s hope the solution pops up soon

All I can do is add to the number of users experiencing this, and the most frustrating thing is that there is often no obvious or repeatable cause.

I went through tech support and the “solution” was to use the classic graphics engine. And to disable Extensions and reload them only when needed.

Instability appeared to me to be related to some sort of background process (windows 11 in my case), and GPU related.

Are you using an external drive or cloud to save you working or backup files?
Whats your monitor setup?

Couple of other things to try:

1)Completely remove video drivers, then restart and reinstall. Try an older driver from 6 months ago.
2) disable the nvidia gpu and use the integrated cpugpu (for testing)
3) use 1 monitor only (for testing). Generally ensure that SU is running on you main monitor.

My suspicion is that sketchup is struggling to adapt to different monitor resolutions/aspect ratios.
I see a lot of graphics instability and flaws with menus, color picker, etc.

I also changed my PC to a new one…didnt help

Now Im about to try a new HDMI cable just to rule that out.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you for this. Sounds like exactly what I am experiencing. Thankfully 2023 is pretty stable for me. Occasional crashes dragging in larger textures, but tolerable. I just got to a point where I needed to stop troubleshooting and get some actual work done. I did the DDU and completely removed the 5070Ti drivers. Multiple times. Trying both studio and game drivers. Its so sad because I bought this new pc with this video card for speed purposes and it had done nothing but slow me done. It is amazing when everything is working though. Easy navigation and heavy model, super quick renders. Its awesome. Hoping for a fix soon.

My troubleshooting was probably a solid 12 hours before I gave up. Very thankful for my copilot, ChatGPT. I believe we tried almost everything. Yes I disabled autosaves, repaired the install and must have submitted at least 10 bugsplats begging for some help.

Decided to try 2025 again today. Ran great for about 4 hours and crashed on idle when I was making lunch. Crash #216048

Still keeps happening. No solution in sight. Crash #256753. 2025 is unusable.
