I like may here have never had a problem importing a DWG file. I usually import a survey plan for most projects. I am not sure why you are having trouble?
Alot of good attention going into this problem. Iâm not a MAC user so I certainly wonât have much useful input in that regard. I was also thinking of using the web version as an interim workaround so well done to @endlessfix for suggesting that.
One curious question from my side (not sure if it will help). I know some PCâs struggle when files have strange naming formats and I noticed that the first two files have hyphens and two period points. I also noted that the topo.dwg file had a different response (when imported) to the original files uploaded. Could the file naming not be a portion of the problem? Again on PC, file association might play a role but I donât know if thatâs something MACâs would experience, so just thinking out loud.
Same here, I was finally able to give it a try and it imported in my version of SU Pro (Win 10) in about 6-7 secs. Itâs an ugly dwg to be sure but thatâs not the programâs fault just poor technique imo.
Hi,
am no expert and recently had a lot of trouble importing cad files. am using SketchupPro 2020 I think.
i have one tip that might help: change the units in the options dialong box around. i was getting huge disparities in the size of the models I was importing. I usually worl in millimetres and some cad files were 25 times larger till I opted to import in inches.
Haha yes it is an ugly file. Certainly the surveyor is not as interested in aesthetics as much as the pure data.
I do not think file naming on a Mac is the issue. But I am no expert. The only other odd thing on my computer is an old X11 alias that cannot be deleted. It appeared with a Catalina upgrade and still exists with Big Sur. I cannot upgrade beyond Big Sur. X11 is some file that has to do with other shareware graphics programs like Gimp and Inkspace. Even deleting those programs and using CleanMyMac did not eliminate the X11 file. Anyway, itâs a long shot ideaâŚ
I am now using the web version as a work around which works great.
I am on a Mac and was able to just drag and drop the files into a new SU window, the import window which pops up gives a number of options which I have all of those âoffâ.
No issues with the import, questionable file arrangement.
You donât need to go through the import file process on SU2021 unless you want to.
Thank you for FINALLY asking this question!! It just shouldnt be this hard, this far down the line.
Btw âboxâ. âNever a problem for meâ
surely doesnât help a frustrated SketcherâŚ
Hah! I guess thatâs why he followed up with several helpful posts after this one. In the process of trouble shooting to help the OP.
At that point in the thread it was my way of saying yes it works so there is an issue to find. After that we got more information to go on and tried trouble shooting.
No means of importing works for me. There is an undiscovered bug or problem somewhere. But the workaround of using the web version of SketchUp (or Shop) works for me.
So now I have a brand new Mac Studio and Iâve installed the latest update for Sketchup Pro. And still importing any dwg or dxf (version 2013) fails. The only difference was trying dxf. A warning appeared saying some parts of the drawing are vey far from the origin (not really). And then it failed.
So I can safely eliminate all hardware failure / compatibility issues. What else can it be? Migration Assistant transferred everything from my iMac seamlessly so I could start Sketchup without needing to login or verify my license, so could there a bad setting that got transferred with it?
How does it fail exactly? Can you upload the .dwg file in question so we can try to import it?
Here it is:
AravaliSite.dwg (51.0 KB)

There is nothing in the file that SketchUp can import, only a large hatch object. Recreate its boundaries or convert it into a region.
Ok, then what about this? Just a few random lines in a very small area close to the origin. Surely this should have no problem except it does.
test.dwg (32.7 KB)
Just found I can now import as dxf but still not dwg. Just yesterday neither worked. So I can say the issue is (partially) resolved but I didnât do anything in between so canât say how good my mileage will be. Thanks to all for looking into it. No solution, but encouraging me to try again somehow worked eventually, despite what they say about repeating the same action and expecting a different result.
I donât use a Mac but I remember that some users have posted here before with similar problems. I wonder if @colin has a clue about what might be different with these setups.
A known thing is that export/import problems arise when SketchUp is used directly from the downloaded file without installing it.
That imports ok for me on Mac. It is only 1/8th inch across, but didnât have any errors.
So what might be the common denominator for the Mac users who cannot import or export DWG? Are they lacking some system component? Case-sensitive file system?
