Well golly and WTF, been away from SketchUp a few days and now feel in Twilight Zone. The guide tool not working. Click origin, and drag line and every thing normal, but with final click the guide line disappears. In the View menu the guides show as visible. Have tried in different model files, have rebooted. No joy. Feel like I should know whats wrong, but don’t. Any help? Thanks .
You wouldn’t get a guideline if you start from the origin. You should only get a guide point in that case.
What do you get if you click on an axis line or some existing edge.
Your profile says you are using SketchUp 2023. If that’s the case, it hasn’t changed in more than a year. Even SketchUp 2024 hasn’t changed in months. What’s changed on your end since the last time you used the Tape Measure tool to make guides?
Thanks,
I am clicking on existing edges in different model files. Dashed line is there and then disappears with final click. I am using SU '24 and have only been away from it a few days. Have noticed a little red dashed line next to the tape measure tool that I have not noticed before.
If I click & drag on an existing line normally I would get a dashed guide line overlay on that line. Not so.
Attached is screenshot showing guide line, but with final click it disappears.
Have you had a windows update recently? It may have downloaded a graphic driver that is causing problems. Check for a graphic driver from the intel site, don’t trust windows to tell you it is up to date.
Don’t understand that. I am on Mac Pro O.S.
My mistake, saw the graphic card in your profile and assumed windows.
Thanks anyhoo!
Please correect your forum profile.
As I wrote, SketchUp 2024 hasn’t changed so something else is responsible. Either pilot error or possibly an operating system/graphics driver update.
That’s been there for many years. It’s supposed to indicate that the tool will create guides. You could try tapping Option after getting the tool and see if the behavior changes. Share a SketchUp model file in which this is happening so we can see exactly how things are set up and try on different hardware.
Yeah, poked around a bit, but could not find the place to change my profile.
Here is the model file

Sonoma, Sequoia or something else?
Intel or M2, M3 M4 based Mac?
Are you using the new or the old graphics engine?
Please fill out your forum profile correctly. It helps us help you.
Click the hand icon you uploaded that follows your posts around. It should be upper right corner. Then the little person shaped icon. Then look for preferences / profile.
Well, never a dull moment and this one is feeling pretty tense.
I have lost functionality in SketchUp and apparently it is on my end.
Don’t know why this started happening all of a sudden when a few days ago it was working fine.
I am basically a builder who has learned to manage working in SketchUp and Layout to produce plans for constructing dozens of structures, but don’t have real finesse with the program beyond getting something done.
Looking for suggestions.
I can update my O.S. and SketchUp programs, see if that helps.
Is there a chance that my graphics card is not working, needs replacing?
Feeling inept, but could not find editable fields to update my profile.
Current information:
Sketchup Version - 24.0.483
Processor - 2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
Graphics card - Intel Iris Plus Graphics 1536 MB
Memory - 16 GB 3733 MHz LPDDR4X
Thanks for the help
As @bmike suggests, you could try switching to the Classic graphics engine in the Preferences>Graphics window. You must restart SketchUp after switching for the setting to take effect.
Click on your avatar at the top right of the forum window, then on the person icon, Preferences, and Profile. Update the information and scroll to the bottom of the page to click on Save changes.
What operating system?
Sonoma, Sequoia?
Go to the Apple upper left and ‘About…’
Much thanks for time and advice.
Reloaded SketchUp '24 and things seem to be working.
Much relief.
Also was just checking - you were on an older version of 24, so glad it worked for you (assuming you downloaded and re-installed).
Well that was a short lived success.
Problem is back and I have:
• Updated SketchUp twice to 24.0.598
• Run diagnostics on Macbook Pro with no issues reported.
• Have tried different styles and checked guide settings.
Strange thing is, the guide lines show up in the open file preview window, .jpg attached.
Not sure where to turn next
Thanks.
Have you done this?
My guess would be that Sequioa is the problem. Sketchup 24 is not supported on it I think, it works for some people but others have various strange issues.
