Graphics issue - Running Windows in Parallels Mac

Howdy. Getting some pixelation/aliasing on my edges when running SU v2026.2.243 for Windows 11 within the Parallels VM environment on my MBP M3.

Tried changing the anti-aliasing setting but then it created a persistent crash on every SU boot - forcing me to reinstall Windows and SU completely. Any tips how to solve appreciated. Also tried both new and classic engine and same result.

The new graphics engine uses DX12, and Parallels only gives you DX11. Using the classic graphics engine should work, with antialiasing.

Thx Colin. Switching to the Classic engine didn’t seem to change anything. I’m also locked out of changing the ‘Multisample anit-aliasing’ setting. Not sure if that’s connected or not. Submitted a support ticket for further investigation.

Did you remember to restart SketchUp after changing any graphics settings?

In some combinations the use fast feedback can clash with the antialiasing. I’m not sure why that check box is grayed out. If you can uncheck use fast feedback, see if you have more antialiasing options.

I can only uncheck Fast Feedback with the new graphics engine selected. Otherwise it stays greyed out.

I do have Parallels, I will check what combination works for me.

One thought, on Mac Retina screens you generally don’t need antialiasing, and don’t see any jaggy lines. What resolution is your VM set to use?

Good question Colin. I switched to using ‘Best for Retina Display’ - even though I have an external 1080p monitor. I feel like though perhaps the anti-alias is a moot point as if Parallels, to your first point, doesn’t support Advanced Materials and Environments, then is not the ideal environment to work in if I were to need those. Hmmm.

I hit the same problems you did. My Windows 11 was set to above 4000 pixels across. Here’s a screenshot of part of the SketchUp window, set to not use antialiasing:

Alas, to get screenshots of advanced graphics things, you won’t be able to use Parallels.

A bit frustrating but I guess good to know. Thx for checking.

Have you considered giving crossover a go?

That’s a translation layer designed for running windows games on Mac, it probably has better support for DX12

I’ve saw using it to run cyberpunk 2077 on their Mac before it came to MacOS - apparently it doesn’t perform much differently to the actual port

Sounds like a cool idea - skipping the Windows emulator altogether. It failed to Install SketchUp 2026 on testing. So would have to see if there’s a way to get around that in order to fully test.

I´ve tried that as well, but it says that some drivers are missing and it can´t be installed. I really hoped for it to work because I´m sick of windows, just want to return to mac full time but i need Revit Importer and Scan essentials, I can find a replace for scan essentials but there´s no other tool that works like Revit importer. for some reason when I ask my brother or any person that uses Revit to export the models as IFC, there are always missing parts. I don´t know what limitations exist to add those features to mac but I really hope it´s possible to do it someway

Just out of curiosity, why are you using Parallels to run SU for Windows on your Mac? I was running Parallels on my Mac for a while to run an app that was only available on Windows. I found it so inconvenient to be constantly rebooting back-and-forth that eventually I just bought a cheap Windows computer to run my one windows app. Plus, Windows and macOS are different enough that I was constantly making errors navigating. Why not just run SU for Mac? Again, just curious. Thanks.

Were you using Parallels or Boot Camp? With Parallels you generally don’t do much rebooting, and that Windows and macOS can both see your files is handy sometimes.

I was just doing screen recording for some tutorials. My primary system is Mac but I know sometimes its nice to show how something is done or differs on PC. As @franciscofiallosb pointed out, there is still no mac eq. of Scan Essentials or Revit Importer. Not that I use those regularly - but nice to have at the ready without transferring files, settings, etc between different devices.

One option I do sometimes is to run Microsoft’s ‘Windows App’ on my Mac, connect to my work PC, and then I can use my Mac screen recording to make the demo. The frame rate may not be perfect, but it’s easier than trying to get my underpowered desktop PC to have the screen recording abilities my Mac has.

Alas. All this has just reinforced my sticking to recording on Mac. But I learned a few things along the way so no real loss
