Frustrated with Orbit tool

When I installed/upgraded to SU version 2024 my mouse wheel went from controlling the orbit tool to a zoom tool this drives me insane. I have 2 laptops identically loaded with SU 2024 one mouse still orbits the other zooms any way to reset my mouse?

It would help to update your forum profile as I assume you aren’t using 2018 anymore.

I am on a Mac - but from my PC days I seem to remember I needed to update the mouse drivers if using something other than a ‘generic’ mouse - ie Logitech mice with programmable buttons.

IIRC I think you can also go into the control panel for the OS and assuming both mice are identical from laptop to laptop you could check to make sure the settings are the same:

I don’t know if you can change anything and lock it only to SketchUp… its been a long time since I had a PC (Windows XP days!)

The default for the middle/wheel button has always been “orbit” and rotating the wheel has zoomed. I have a Logitech MX2 mouse that has a tiny button near the wheel that activates or disables the “freewheel” mode, and for me it remains impossible to get the mouse to orbit if the stepping in the wheel is turned off. Another thing is that when the mice I have been using have worn down the wheel button has usually been the first thing to break, so a hardware fault is also possible.

Rolling the mouse wheel is Zoom. Pressing down the mouse wheel and keeping it pressed while moving the mouse is Orbit.

Adding a press and hold of the Shift key when orbiting is Pan.

Yes that’s how I used it before. Now it zooms only pressing and hold or pi ching left or right

Something has changed with your computer, mouse or operating system. SketchUp did not change mouse controls.

Check out this post: SU2023 - Orbit tool - unexpected auto zoom. If your mouse has a tilt wheel feature that could be the culprit

You could also borrow a mouse from someone or buy a cheap one and see if the behavior changes. If it does, there is an issue with your mouse, it’s driver or its settings.
