2d graphics excessive file size How to reduce
What exactly do you mean by
??
Are you referring to an exported image?
The file contained 2D jpeg photos imported from Sketchup textures club. The file only had about a few hundred Kbs before importing / downloading only about 50 jpeg pictures. Before the download the file had only some small items such as a window frame. I think the excessive file size (171,000 KBs) might be due to the higher number than average of colors in each of the photos. But 171,000 KBs seems high for only 50 pictures in 2D graphics. A screenshot was uploaded, because too large to upload as a skp file. Thanks
Why do you need all of those images in your model? Get rid of the ones you don’t need. If you need them all and they make the SketchUp file size too large, reduce the size of the images in an image editor before inserting them into SketchUp.
In the past I used other skp files with hundreds times more than this and worked fine and showed less than a few hundred KBs rather than 171,000 kbs. There is something malfunctioning or incorrect format possibly in the model causing the excess KBs for only a very few use of items in a model. I will need all these pictures and much more for my project. Is there a transfer tool to upload the skp file?
The size of the photos are between 15’ and 10’ in dimension, which is not that large. I need to use this size for the model which are for commercial display advertising
That’s not the what I was referring to by size. I was referring to the pixel dimensions.
You’ve shared files here previously. Do the same thing you did then. Upload the file to DropBox or Google Drive and share the link.
thanks, i forgot the tool
You need to make the shared file accessible.
I fixed incorrect tag usage. You’ve been using SketchUp long enough to know that all edges and faces should be created and remain untagged.
Then I purged the unused stuff from your file. You are hoarding a lot of unused components and materials. Again, you’ve been using SketchUp long enough that this should be part of your process of keeping your models clean.
The file size went from 167 Mb to 138 Mb. You could reduce this more by reducing the size of the images before you import them. This one, for example is more than 7000 pixels wide. There’s no need for such a large image in a SketchUp file.
As I told you last night, reduce the size of the images to something reasonable before you add them. In most cases 1024 pixels or at most 2048 pixels wide will be plenty.
The file size is excessive because the jpeg images you used are large.
It’s as simple as that
The largest one is 5500x3500px at 16mb and is saved with a 99% jpeg quality level, so no wonder it’s 16mb.
There are others that have come straight from a DSLR or Mirroless camera and others that have been AI upscaled
Here are the files you have imported for the images
These are 137mb alone.
I went through and reduced the large images in the back row to reasonable sizes and deleted the smaller duplicates. This reduced the file size by more than 55%.
how do you untag faces and edges. Where is this in the model
You could open the groups and components in the model and then, in Entity Info select Untagged. I used an extension from Sketchucation called Default Tag Geometry to quickly go through the entire model so I didn’t have to spend a bunch oof time looking for and fixing the model.
I’ve used SU for a while and probably as good or better than the average user, and most would probably not have found the ext Default Tag Geometry tool which are among thousands of extensions in the Sketchucation library, There are other tools within Sketchup such as Purge option under model tab in the menu and cleanup tool that I’ve used–which should indicate I’ve covered more than the average user to be fair, so I do my homework before reaching out on the forum. You mentioned, last night that size has no impact on the file size, but its mentioned again twice to reduce the size of the image. thanks
Maybe not but in the time you’ve been using SketchUp you should already have learned to keep the geometry in your models untagged.
The only reason I use Default Tag Geometry is to fix models created by others. I don’t need it for my own modeling because I keep all geometry untagged at all times.
You misunderstood. You wrote:
The length and width of the images in SketchUp have no impact on the file size. I told you:
The pixel dimensions of the images DO have an effect on file size.
It doesn’t matter if you insert an image and make it 15 inches wide or 15 feet wide. What matters for file size is the resolution of the image which is impacted by the number of pixels in the image.
Thanks, I understand–the pixels / resolution impact the file load, not the physical size. The images in the model were by physical size i.e., one of the images being 10’ X 15" when using the “Measuring Tool” in the model. Other images are smaller 5’ X 8’. I use these large sizes because they are to display in Store Windows in a Shopping Mall. So the images need to be sized as they normally appear in real life.
I get that. Again, I never told you that the dimensions of the image in the model has anything to do with file size. Make them 100 feet by 150 feet if you want. That’s not going to increase the file size.
thanks, its clear.
