Double click file open - Layout 2018 BUG?

I have a problem in opening the file by double click on Explorer (Windows 7 and Windows 10).
If layout is closed Windows open the layout and the file correctly :+1:.
If layout is already open nothing happens.:-1:
Is this a layout 2018 bug or a problem of my installation?

I haven’t seen it and just tried it now to see exactly what happens. The LayOut file opened immediately.

Is LayOut active when you double click on the file? Or is some other program on top? I’ve noticed LO won’t come to the top if buried behind other active programs. The icon on the task bar will highlight however. Clicking on the icon will bring it to the front. It’s been that way for a long time, though. It’s not new to LO2018.

What happens to me is that the layout file doesn’t open, nothing happens.
This on both the 2 installation i have. Windows 7 and Windows 10.
Maybe i did something wrong in the installation of the new version?
I installed 2018 version before uninstall 2017.

For correct installation of SketchUp and LayOut you must right click on the downloaded installer file and choose Run as administrator from the context menu. Did you do that? If not, close both SketchUp and LayOut now and try it. This time you should be presented with the option to Repair. use that.Even if you think you did it before, do it now to make sure.

If you’re going to uninstall the older version, you did this in the correct order. You should always leave the earlier version for awhile until you’re fully moved into the new version. There’s no rush to uninstall the older version, either.

Tried to repair sketchup as administrator - same problem
Tried to uninstall sketchup and reinstall (as administrator) - same problem
Maybe something wrong with registry? Wich registry keys do I have to reinstall?

“Solved”.:+1::+1::+1:
I tryed to reinstall 2017 before reinstall/repair 2018.
Now it works fine.
Now the question is: when I’ll uninstall 2017 will the problem come again?

This should not present a problem. You can have a number of different SU versions reside on your system with no ill effect, and by the same token, a version may be uninstalled without issue

I have the same problem. As soon as I uninstall Sketchup 2017. Layout 2018 will not open a file from the windows file browser if Layout 2018 is running.

The uninstaller probably removed the file association between “.layout” files and LayOut 2018. You’ll either need to fix that file association by hand, or you could reinstall 2018 to have this association automatically created.

I don’t think this is the problem, because when you double clIck a file
Layout 2018 open without opening the file.

Last night I reformated my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 10pro trying to fix the problem. Did a fresh install of Sketchup 2018. The problem is still there. If layout 2018 is open it will not open a new file by clicking it in Windows File Explorer. All of my default file associations are correct. If I use right click file “open with” nothing happens.

Not sure whats going on…

Hi Jeremy, in windows explorer, when you rt click and select Open with… does it show LayOut 2018?

Trent

Yes, it does. It just does not respond.

Thanks!

Hi Jeremy, it looks like you found a bug. I have verified that I see this with both Win 7 and 10 and occurs once the uninstall of 2017 has occurred. It appears that instead of loading the selected file with the double click from Windows explorer it is trying to launch another session of LayOut which we do not allow. Dragging the file from Windows explored into LayOut will open it, but does require the windows to be minimized.

A solution to this would be to not uninstall 2017 but rather delete the 2017 folder under the Program Files after 2018 has been installed.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention and I have opened an issue for it.

Trent.

Thanks, Trent! I have been using drag and drop for my normal workflow and will continue until there is an update.

Thank you for your time,

Jeremy

Hi there,

I have the same problem as described before, while I have not used SU 2017, only SU 2018. What can I do?

Ensure that you have installed SketchUp in the correct way.

In your normal user login.
Close SketchUp [or Layout] if it’s open.
Find the SketchUp installer’s exe file - probably in your Download folder, if you can’t find it download a new installer.
Select the exe file’s icon.
Right-click > Context-menu >
“Run as administrator”
When prompted choose “Repair”…
[If you have uninstalled SketchUp you choose “Install”]
When the installation completes restart SketchUp / Layout and see if it improves…

Installing SketchUp [and its connected Layout app] in any other way will at some point result in all kinds of unexpected and flaky issues - just as you describe.
Being a user who happens to have admin powers is not sufficient.
Double-clicking the exe to run it will NOT give the exact same results as doing it properly.
Also never install an app like this when logged in to the separate ‘administrator’ account - that can produce other flaky behavior…

Hi TIG, thanks for your reply.

I did as you described, however I encounter the same problem. After that, I reinstalled Sketchup, but the same problem is still happening.

Anyone has any ideas on how to tackle this?

The problem described is with an earlier installation of version 2017.

So it is a different problem, I guess?
Have you had an installation of another , earlier version of SketchUp?
Does the drag and drop method work for ya?

Yes you could say so. I don’t have an earlier version of Sketchup installed.

I have the same issues though as described before.

The drag and drop method is working.
