After years of smooth operation with Layout, I now have a file that I have been working on for some time in Layout that will no longer open.
Layout can still boot up, run and also open all my other Layout files.
But when I open this file it spins the beach ball and crashes layout.
I did change the name of the layout file a week ago but sure I opened it since and I also restored a file back to previous before the name change on drop box, but that will not open.
Any suggestions welcome.? I would hate to think I lost this work.
You will find there are a few other discussions about a new issue in 2020.2, where LayOut gets confused when you open a file that has elements where the original file is missing. In addition to renaming, did you move files around? Something led to the linked files being disconnected.
2020.1 copes with those cases, so you could work on the file again using 2020.1. Hopefully you could go into Document Setup, References, and relink the missing files, and then the file would open in 2020.2.
2020.1 had its own LayOut issues, so you might not want to completely return to using it! So, instead, close LayOut and SketchUp, and rename the Applications SketchUp 2020 folder to be SketchUp 2020.2, and reinstall 2020.1. It will make a new SketchUp 2020 folder, and you can open that version while working on files that would have crashed 2020.2
In the forum, in the upper right of the page, is your avatar. You can click on that to get to any private messages you have. I will send a link to the 2020.1 version to you.
Hello Colin, I believe I am having the same issues here. I used to be able to open a Layout 2020 file but now crashed upon opening. My Layout version is up to date.
Will I be able to get the link to 2020.1 from you and see if this solution works for me?
Thank you very much! This will save my hair from being pulled out!
I seem to be having similar issues. I still have the SketchUpPro-2020-0-363-132 file . . . but when I tried
“rename the Applications SketchUp 2020 folder to be SketchUp 2020.2, and reinstall 2020.1. It will make a new SketchUp 2020 folder, and you can open that version while working on files that would have crashed 2020.2” It said there was a newer version installed already. I wasn’t 100% sure where the Applications Sketchup folder was–or what exactly you meant. And maybe I need the link you sent to the others??
The renaming the folder option only applies to Mac users. For Windows you would want to uninstall the existing later version, then install the older version.
You have a 2021 license, and so instead of getting the best 2020 version going you could try 2021 instead. It has fixes for the issues that forced people into reinstalling the older 2020.1.1.
I had your 2021 license sent to you, if you would like to give it a try. This will directly give you the Windows 2021 installer: https://bit.ly/suwin21
Really appreciate your response!
I went the long way around. I was skeptical about locking myself in to 2021 (you cant install 2020 on another computer after that) but decided to afterall. Everything works now–thank you!
