Components disappearing

When I create a new component I am prompted each time to set the axis. After doing so I create the component and it appears in Outliner. As soon as I click in the model the component disappears, deletes actually. This happens about nine out of ten times. Hoping for advice. thanks

Is the box checked?

No, that choice doesn’t exist in my “create component” dialog box. I am using Pro 2025. Open to suggestions.

Thank you for trying to help me.

Really? It does in Create Component in SketchUp 2025 for me.

Look again.

It’s really not there. It used to be but that choice has disappeared and I’m so far unable to figure it out.

Please update your forum profile, too. It says you’re using SketchUp 2015 Make.

Okay will do. Thank you.

Sadly I cannot figure out how to get the screenshot into this forum. I am a 73 year old woodworker and I am struggling with this.

After you’ve created the screenshot, drag it into a reply here.

I am using version 2025 of Pro. When updating my profile that wasn’t a choice in the drop-down menu.

Do you have any geometry selected before activating the Create Component command?

Hopefully they will add that soon.

Maybe you can share the SketchUp model file with us so we can see what you are working with.

You get that dialog when creating a component in a free area in the scene. There isn’t any selection to replace. You would add whatever geometry you want, then exit the component. What you have in the scene is now that component you made.

If instead you select some things in the scene, and tap G, then you should see the dialog Dave showed.

I select the geometry then right click to save as a component; just like always. The newly created component will appear in outliner then disappear as soon as I click in the model.

Thanks for that confirmation @colin.

Are you right clicking in empty space or on the selected geometry. It soounds like you’re right clicking in empty space to get Create Component. And then of course the component will disappear because you haven’t put any content in it.

I realized something. I think at some point in time right-clicking would let the current selection stay in effect. For some time now right-clicking deselects what was selected.

So, instead of right-clicking, tap G. Or, make sure you are on top of something in the current selection when you right-click.

That must be different on Mac than on Windows. Right clicking on the selection does not deselect the selected entities on Windows. Right clicking in empty space has always deselected the selection, though.

It’s the same on Mac. I did wonder if it was always that way. It is useful sometimes to select some things and then right-click Invert Selection. For example, when the scene looks empty because of a very distant object, selecting around the Origin area, then invert selection, delete, zoom extents, could let you see scene correctly. In a case like that it might be hard to right-click on something in the current selection, because it’s too small to see. That use case can be worked around in various ways, for example right-clicking in Outliner, or use the Edit menu copy of the context menu. Then you can invert selection without deselecting anything.
