Unable to create a component in SketchUp Pro 2017

I am having difficulty creating new components. Once I’ve made a selection of what I want to become a component and then used G or “Make a Component”, all operations, other than , are unavailable. I cannot get the dialogue box to name or save the component. The only axes (red/blue/green) do appear after I click on “Make the Component” which suggests to me that SketchUp recognises the selection.

Could you upload the SKP file so we can see what you’ve got?

Are you selecting all attached geometry? If not, are you ticking the box for Replace selection with component?

I think I have found the problem. The dialogue box was hidden somehow in the “Default Tray”. After closing this tray the dialogue box became visible. Sorry for the trouble, but I think this is all sorted. Thanks

You could pull the dialog box out so it opens more in the middle of the screen.

How did you install SketchUp when you did it? Did you just double click on the installer file to make it run?

OK, I have done that. I am not sure why it was as difficult to find and can only say that closing the Default Tray revealed it.

Yes, I installed by double clicking the installer. I think the Default tray was set up in the earlier version of SketchUp I had running.

If you did, SketchUp is not installed correctly and that can make weird things happen. Install it correctly now. Quit SketchUp. Find the installer which is probably still in your Downloads folder (or download it again) and right click on it. Choose Run as administrator from the context menu. When the option presents itself, choose Repair.
