Workspace Tray Locations

I use multiple monitors and place individual trays on my side monitors. On my previous workstation setup, the trays would maintain their position when opening any new or existing SketchUp file. I am now setting up a new workstation, but the trays will not stay where I place them. After arranging my workspace and closing the file, the tray locations are not maintained. The ones on my right screen remain as placed, but the ones on my left screen are open but not visible and not located where I had placed them. I do know how to reset the workspace to get them back, but then have to move and resize each time I open a file. Once again, this is not the case on my previous workstation. Please help. Thanks.

I’ve encountered a similar issue. I’ve never had so many problems with trays before. Once a month, all my trays disappear, and I have to reset them all. I’m so tired of SketchUp not having a workspace-saving system like every other software. I requested this feature many, many years ago.

I’m using SketchUp 24.0.594 on Windows 11 Pro 24H2.

And yes, I did install SketchUp as an administrator.

To reply your post @RonW729 , did you know that once you set up your trays, and before you close SU, you need to save the file. It’s when you save that the tray positions got memorized, not when you close.

I’ve experienced this also. I think certain types of bug splat reset the initial settings of the workspace, causing you to lose trays and toolbars. I can’t pinpoint or repeat the problem though so I’ve never brought it up here.

I have never had any issues like this.

After you get the tray set up the way you want you could save a model file to update PrivatePreferences.json and then make a copy of it that you rename. If you have some event that affects the tray setup, delete the original, rename the copy to PrivatePreferences.json and then reopn SketchUp. The .json file will be found in AppData/Local/SketchUp … folder.

GREAT! Thanks @DaveR . I always wanted to find that file. I will save that file very preciously.

On Windows, I didn’t find a PrivatePreferences.json but I found a default_preferences.json (C:User/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/SketchUp/SketchUp 2024/SketchUp/Plugins/su_pcp/pref/default_preferences.json)

I’m wondering if it’s the right file.
