Toolbar and Dialog position being saved off screen

Continuing the discussion from Workspace not saving nor Toolbars nor trays. Sketchup 2023:

I’ve been having some support problems with dialog and toolbar positions in SketchUp 2023. The problem is that when the screen configuration changes it is possible that the saved toolbar or dialog position is off screen. Unfortunately SketchUp does not check to ensure the item is on the screen when showing it. Most of my customers are unable to fix this problem on their own. I’ve been manually editing the private preferences file to bring them back but needless to say it’s a real support night mare.

Any thoughts @thomthom or @ene_su? Currently I’m just telling my customers to downgrade to 2022.

Is this logged at GitHub?

Not that I know of. I do not have the time to log it right now.

I’m seeing this first now. For any SketchUp support related issues, use either the issue tracker for API bug or feture requests. For other topics related to the API use developer-support@sketchup.com.

I don’t have capacity to monitor PMs on the forums much any more.

Thanks so much, Neil_Burkholder. I am surprised more Sketchup users do not have problems with this issue. I have noticed this happens a lot when I am changing monitor set ups. I used to get them back by simply unplugging my laptop from my external monitors…They would all just pop up on screen and I could drag them back where they should go. That stopped working.

Your tip worked and allowed me to fix my layout and get my toolbars back on screen.
I am currently running Sketchup 2024. After deleting my preferences file, my toolbar layout was completely cleared, and SketchUp then allowed me to add them all again under the view/toolbars within Sketchup bringing them from off the screen and resetting them.

I am running windows 11 Pro fpr Workstations. The location is as follows:
ThisPC/WindowsC:/Users/“username”/AppData/Local/Sketchup/Sketchup2024/SketchUp/PrivatePreferences.json

You will find your PrivatePreferences.json file there. Delete it to reset your toolbars.
Afterwards, you can add all your toolbars and default tray as desired. It should save them when you save the next project you are working on within Sketchup.

On another note, another thing that has also helped me stay set up with the same shortcuts years without having to redo all of them…

If you want to export your Shortcuts, and import them onto another machine or into a newer version of Sketchup after renewing a subscription, they are located within Sketchup at Windows/Preferences/Shortcuts…the is an export option there. It will create a file that you can then import into Sketchup when needed.
