Why is Layout running so slow?

Layout - in just the last 2 days has been running very slow. I’ve used layout for all my projects, but just with this recent project, it’s lagging when I change the render to hybrid - takes over 10 min’s to load. I also changed the style to Construction. My computer system is exactly the same as last week, my layout settings are the same as last week…what am I missing?

What is different about the current SketchUp file you are working with? How big is the file, how many edges? Hybrid and Vector rendering take more computer poly the higher poly the model.

Upload your Layout file or a link to the layout file here to get a specific diagnosis. And update your profile, we need to know things like your graphics card and SketchUp version to answer your questions. I assume “10” means your operating system is Windows 10?

Vector and Hybrid would be great to use but for speed with large models, unfortunately Raster seems to be the only viable option for Layout at this point. You can actually get very nice results if you tweak your SU style and LO line scale setting.

Here is a post about that.

I had a similar issue which I just resolved. If you have a backup of both your .skp file and your .layout file, try the following diagnostic steps:

  • Inside your current Layout document: change your Sketchup model reference to a copy of the file from the last time Layout was able to render it correctly / at regular speeds (2-days ago). If this doesn’t solve it…
  • Open the Layout document you saved from 2-or-more days ago: verify it works correctly still with the old Sketchup model.
  • If it does work correctly: link your new .skp model inside your old .layout document and test.
  • If it doesn’t work correctly: repeat with other models you’ve created to see if it is the app, or some issue with the model / layout.

My issue was from my Sketchup Model, so I had to revert to an earlier version of the model. Luckily not much work was lost. I could not find a rhyme or reason for what changed in the model that caused it to break, and there were no error messages even in the document info pallet.

UPDATE: I noticed that the ‘Scenes’ palette was malfunctioning in Sketchup. Something that happened to the scenes in the Sketchup model was causing Layout to crash when it would try to read it in vector format. Sketchup just showed a blank greyed-out scenes panel.

Release notes for 2024.0.2. It was just released.
