When using freehand drawing, an area fills in when joined

Hi! Im new to sketchup and usung it for my uni project. I am using the freehand tool to mark the roads of a site. When they join in one area, the inside fills? Why is this? (Please excuse my very amateur work)

Thank you!!!

SketchUp is a surface modeler. It is supposed to create a face when you close a loop of edges that lie on a plane. What you are seeing is expected behavior. If you don’t want the face to show, you can change the Face Style to Wireframe so no faces show. They will still be created but won’t be displayed. Alternatively you could explode the imported image so it becomes a texture on a face and do the tracing on that face. This will just divide the larger face into regions.

Select the face and delete it but the drawn outline will remain.
