Thank you very much for these questions and the follows are my answers:
I have always worked for ZAST(Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology) all my life so far. I retired last year and now I still employed by the office temperarily to help on some of the things. My work were always to initiate international cooperations and projects to promote the advancement of science and technology in China. ZAST is a membership based organization that part of the AST system in China. Most members of ZAST are mid-level or above professionals with either science or technology backgrounds. The best of job I loved and made me stick to my job was the freedom to do things of my realizations of their benefits to the community. I am current trying to advocate the concept of open community lab in Zhejiang for a more innovative China. There are many maker-spaces in China but very seldom a open community lab where any one can stop by to use its facilities almost for any educational purposes. Be innovative is its focus. I personal do not hold any skilled as an inventor except that I had a half-way formal education in computer science back in 1979. All my knowledge about computing are re-established through self learning. I came across sketchup as I was thought up about one of my recent public science education project - Insect Trap. My ideas behind it is to use the opportunity to set a insect trap, participants can be exposed to not only entomology but also engineering designs, data collections and use, physics, eco-diversity, design thinking, Project-Lead-The-Way learnning.
As soon as I openned up Sketchup I was impressed. I had earlier experience of using other 2D drawing softwares such as: caroldraw and photoshops around the time of 1980 to 1995. As the office has limited funding I had to do all the design myself almost for anything. Comparing to then, Sketchup really is incredible. Using it also made me realizing Sketchup really represent not only a good software but a good design thinking. Whoevers behind it know 100% welcome to make things simple for users. It is so smart to be able to define everything in the software as dots and faces, and it really simplifies the thinking and everything can then be supported by math which is the computer’s best ability.
I am still new to Sketchup. I am not sure if I annoyed anyone to have asked very simple questions so far. I am learning but slowly. I want to understand it more for myself and for my future projects for public educations. I do think Sketchup like other open source learning platforms such as: arduino, Raspberry Pi, and Microbits, should be tought to young students and it should become a regular tool for them to use when and where ever possible and needed.
With Sketchup it is tempting because of it is easy to see what it can do and my eagers shot up, and I have to learn to control it.
(Sorry for any writing mistakes)

Who are you?
My name is Jeremy!

What is your industry and profession?
I just graduated with a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, but now I am working in Software Development in the Landscaping and Hardscaping Industry

Where do you use SketchUp? Personally/professionally?
I use Ruby API in SketchUp professionally but I enjoy browsing the forums personally to learn more about SketchUp and hopefully help others!

Why do you use SketchUp and what is your favorite thing about it? (Besides using it to impress the babes/bros…)
I use SketchUp because the Ruby API is very useful for what my profession demands. My favorite thing about SketchUp is the awesome community and the knowlege sharing that happens here (User-made plugins, Forum participation, and all the fun happenings that get talked about)

How proficient are you in SketchUp? Beginner, intermediate, advanced?
I’ve only been using SketchUp for around 2 months so I’m still a beginner, but I’m trying to become an expert in the Ruby API side.

Have you gone to a SketchUp 3DBasecamp?
I have not attended a SketchUp 3DBasecamp, but it seems like a great place to learn more about SketchUp (but I don’t see the company I work for paying for a ticket…)

What is your current set up? [Computer type, SketchUp version…etc.] (Your lake house and Ferrari don’t count)
I just use my desktop at work with SketchUp Pro 2017.

Do you have a 3D Warehouse page with your models, Extensions, or a website you would like to link to or show off to us?
Not yet, but I’m working on some!

Anything else you would like to tell us? (e.g., you once saw a UFO & tried to model it in SketchUp to get a prototype 3D printed…)
If you’re curious about using Ruby Code to place a texture nicely on a curved surface I’ve got the answer for you! (My main participation on these forums so far…)

What is your favorite Emoji?
:scream: , by far!

Do you enjoy long walks on the beach…?
I prefer hiking in the mountains or swimming in lakes (there’s a lot of those here in Minnesota)

Hello everyone!
My name is Aiden. I just graduated from high school and am an aspiring architect and engineer. I will be attending George Fox University this fall to pursue a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering.

I have mostly just used SketchUp for fun, but more recently, have been using it for more practical applications. For example, my family is building a house (my parents’ profession), and I have been using SketchUp to realize various design ideas and (with Twilight Render) help my parents visualize the project as construction progresses.

I use SketchUp because it is free, easy to use, and surprisingly powerful. I have neither the time or money to invest in purchasing or learning professional modeling software, but Sketchup has provided an ideal platform for everything from just modeling random things for entertainment to the high level of accuracy and complexity demanded by my parents’ house project.

I would place myself in a high-intermediate or advanced proficiency category. I have never had any formal instruction in using SketchUp, but have spent countless hours experimenting and watching YouTube tutorials to learn as many functions as I can (I have not ever been to SketchUp basecamp). At this point, I can say that I feel quite familiar with all of the features and utilizing them to make the most of the time I spend modeling.

I currently use SketchUp Make 2017 on my desktop PC (which is fairly high power, but I don’t know the exact specifications as a friend built it), and my Surface Pro 3.

My favorite emojis are the winky and smiley faces :grinning::wink:

I live on the coast and can walk to the beach from my house. One of my favorite things to do is take long walks there!

Hey, Folks!

I am a Residential General Contractor.

I use SketchUp Make for professional and personal design projects.
I started using SketchUp while I was the General Contractor and Construction Coordinator with Habitat for Humanity. During that time and because I was using it for a non-profit, Google SketchUp provided me with a free professional license. What I like about it was the ability to show my volunteers a picture while trying to describe a certain project needed to be done. Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words! I believe that I am somewhere between “intermediate” and “advanced”. I have not gone to 3DBasecamp, but have used the tutorial videos. I am currently using my laptop to do my design work. I do not have a warehouse page. Yet. I do believe in UFO’s, Sasquatch, Bigfoot, Yeti and ghosts. My favorite Emojis are:joy::crazy_face::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:. Yes, I do like taking long walks. Because my riding lawnmower died and I have almost 2 1/2 - 3 acres to mow, I walk a 21" x 14.8 mile swath once a week!

I am a retired electronics technician who uses Sketchup for wood working plans. It is just a hobby but it helps instead of drawing by hand.

Hi, my name is Michael and I’ve been using Sketchup off and on for woodworking and 3d printing. I’m by no means an expert, but I’ve always been able to figure out how to get done what I needed for my model. I’d add a pic, but I don’t know how to do that on this Mac. So, recently Microsoft installed an update on my Dell laptop and totally hosed it. So I put my foot down and dove into a MacBook Air head first! Needless to say I’m limping along as I’ve been such a hot-key person in the past.

So, my issue is I need to install the SU stl inport/export extension. I went though the Extension manager and found and installed the extension. At least it says it’s installed. The problem is I can’t find it in SU to be able to use it??? Can anyone offer some assistance to this “born-again newly on a man”!

Much appreciated,
Michael

Hi folks. I’m an occasional SketchUp user. Used it years ago to design a boathouse for our cottage and am diving back in again to design a rebuild of the cottage itself – whenever I get an hour or two which isn’t as often as I’d prefer. I’m an old hand at 3D (I led the Maya engineering team for 10 years) but am definitely in learning mode with SketchUp.

Hi, I’m Janet Cook, a secondary school teacher who was just given access to a 3D printer. What would be the best tutorial to use so my middle school students (ages 10-12) can create little doodads to print as Father’s Day gifts?

We can use the printer, that’s not the problem. It’s finding some simple tutorials for the kids to use to design their doodads. Most of them are geared towards building towns. We just want to build a keychain fob or something similar.
