Walk speed is too fast! Can we turn it down?

I’m trying Walk around my model (a pretty simple model of a retirement community) but even the slightest movement forward in Walk is shooting off at 100mph!

Is there a hidden setting to adjust this?

I don’t know if there is a setting, but on my system, the walk speed seems fine. Can you share an example model where your walk speed is too fast? That way we can compare it to our systems to see what the issue might be?

Also, another option might be to use a 3Dconnexion 3D Mouse to navigate.

What are the sizes of your buildings?

If they are very small, it is normal that the walk movement will have you zip fast between the buildings. I this is the case, you can scale your model up to real size. For example, use the Measuring Tape to measure the length of a house with a known value, for example 15 meters. If you see a number like 7 cm or 0,07 m in the Measurement Window (MW), let go of the mouse (don’t click in the MW) then type the real value (40m) then press the Return or the Enter key. Notice that if your units are already set to meters, you dont have to input the m.

If you have a normal value, then the problem lies elsewhere.

Check that your model is not very far from the axes origin.

Can you post your skp file for us to look what might be the problem?

Thanks for your reply.

The model is 1;1 scale. Total size is about 300m by 300m

Axis isn’t too far away, but there are objects in the model that are 1500m way.
I’m in perspective model with few visual effects, though I am using the 2024 DX12 graphics engine.
All video drivers are up to date (yesterdays nvida studio driver)

Walk used to work fine in past models of a similar scale/type. So I suspect graphics engine has changed it.

I’ve stripped the model of all detail and copied it to a new SKP file, and found that it does work normally (walk speed is manageable).

So current theory is that it’s something in the model, such as a component with an axis set to a Long way away.

Larger model = faster walk speed?

Not necessarily.

A normal walking step is about 2 feet or 60 cm.

If the the model is tiny with very small houses, you will have the impression of walking fast.

If the model is very large with gigantic houses, you will have the impression of walking slow.

Of course, you can control the walking speed, as you already discovered, by adjusting the distance from the cross that you see when you select the Walk Tool.

The speed is related to the GPU. I have another laptop now with 2 different GPUs, and the walk speed (same model etc) is different on each.

The RTX3070Ti is a very (very) fast walking speed.
The A3000 is fast but still useable.
and the IrisXE is slightly slower.

these all have latest drivers. Model, monitor, etc, was all the same for each
