I am trying to load Pennsylvania LIDAR Formatted as a USGS DEM file and projected to state plane.
I import into Sketchup and then Sketchup crashes. Is there any guidance for bringing in these types of files without the program crashing?

I am not sure but SketchUp seems to accept only ASCII type of DEM files with UTM projection and i believe this information should be added in this article: Importing DEM Files for Terrain. Other type of files or projections crashes SU.
You can convert to UTM projection and save as ASCII DEM with this program called 3DEM . (Direct Download Link)
