Unable to Open SketchUp File without first launching SketchUp

Hey Everyone - I’m having trouble opening SketchUp files without first launching SketchUp. This previously had never been an issue until I upgraded from version 2022 to version 2023, which I’m not a huge fan of btw. As such, I decided to uninstall the 2023 version and revert back to 2022. However, upon doing so, it appears that SketchUp will now only let me open a file after first launching the software.

I’ve tried re-starting the computer, uninstalling and re-installing SketchUp along with fixing any issues when right-clicking on the program to no avail. Ultimately, I can make this work - but launching the program every time I want to open an existing file isn’t ideal.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated!

What do you mean? If you open a skp file it will obviously launch sketchup.

Have you tried a Repair?
Find the install.exe, select it and right click and choose Run as Admin, follow the prompts and when given the option choose Repair, follow the prompts, reboot PC and try again.

After selecting the SKP file in Windows Explorer, right-click on it. Then, click on the “Open With” menu. Even if SketchUp 2022 is listed, do not select it. Instead, click on “Choose another app” at the bottom.

If SketchUp 2022 is listed in the options, select it from the list, then check the box that says “Always use this app to open SKP files” and click on “OK”.

If it does not appear in the list, click on “More apps” at the bottom.

In the additional apps section, if you find the desired program, select it and follow the same steps as mentioned above.

If it is still not available there, click on “Look for another app on this PC” at the bottom.

Then, Windows Explorer will open. Navigate to the program files folder and locate the SketchUp.exe file in the 2022 folder. Select it, check the box that says “Always use this app to…” and click on “OK”.

I think I got it, you mean the welcome page. You can disable that option on the preferences, don’t remember where exactly but there’s an option to make sketchup opens the welcome page everytime you open it, even from a file.

That worked - Thanks!

and in the case where the selecting the different version in explorer doesn’t work - you need to make a few changes in the registry to the skpfile class items - i edit the older version to point to the later version and remove any really old ones (like 2 versions back).
