Cannot open any old SKP files after updating to 2024

Hello, I’m experiencing an issue with SketchUp 2024 that I can’t seem to solve myself.
I have updated the SketchUp of our workplace to version 2024 and did a brand new clean install.

Now I seem to be unable to open any old SketchUp files.

I have tried setting up default apps through “Open With” as well as through the Default Apps section under Windows settings, with no success.

This is on a Windows 11 machine.
Would appreciate any feedback or solutions.

Update:
Just tried the “Repair” function from Add or Remove programs.
I’m getting the same issue with the same “SketchUp 2024.msi” not found message.

Update 2:
As weird as it is, I am able to open my SKP files, if I navigate to them through the SketchUp 2024 Welcome Screen. They open without problems.
However, double clicking on SKP files brings up the error.

Been a long time since I used windows, but shouldn’t the application be sketchup.exe?

Are you sure it was installed properly? I thought .msi was an installer extension?

I’ve installed it the same way I’ve been doing it the last 12 years - by making sure I run it as administrator, to avoid issues. Never had a problem with it.
Further reading showed me that some people had luck by uninstalling all current versions, restarting their machine, and installing again. I might try that if no fix comes up. It’s just a shame because I spent the past 1.5 hours reinstalling my plugins and templates/styles. I guess I gotta do it again.

What happens if you assign the .skp to point to SketchUp 2024 as the default application to open .skp files.

Also tried that :point_up_2:t2:

If you are unable to change the default app setting using either of these methods, you may need to delete the registry key that stores the default app settings for that file type. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Registry Editor .
  2. Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileAssoc\

  1. Find the file extension that you want to associate with a different app, and then delete the following key:
\DefaultApp

  1. Close the Registry Editor.
  2. Restart your computer.

Once you have restarted your computer, you should be able to change the default app setting for the program.

This part might help.

Issue Resolved!

  1. Uninstall every SketchUp program you have.
  2. Restart computer
  3. Install SketchUp with Adminstrator rights.
  4. Restart computer

I have no idea what the issue was, but restarting after uninstalling is the key! Back to reinstalling plugins (again)! :v:t2:

Edit: Oh WOW! I’ve just realized all my plugins and settings are still there! No extra work needed, this is great!

I was gonna say … an uninstaller only removes file it (as the installer) itself installed. These files are usually only in the %ProgramFiles% and %ProgramData% paths and not in the User’s %AppData% paths. So any files you manually added later should be “safe” and remain untouched.
